Historic Karting is booming overseas as well as here in Australia. The innaugural Australian Vintage Kart Prix will be held next year at Willowbank, Ipswich. The three-day event will run from March 21 to 23.

Mike Best, Secretary of Queensland Vintage & Historic Karting, informed KartSportNews that one of the karts that will be appearing at the AVKP is the world famous DAP chassis which was driven by Ayrton Senna.

"Angelo Parilla, from DAP, will be in attendance and will be bringing with him a kart which raced at that meeting" he wrote.

"One of the most famous karts ever, it is the DAP driven by Ayrton Senna to 2nd place in the Championship. Absolutely priceless, this will be the first time it has been outside Europe. It will also be the 35th anniversary of DAP winning its first World Championship in 1979."

Internationally, the CIK-FIA say that more and more organisations are adopting the CIK's Historic Karting Guidelines. In fact, the CIK has announced its partnership in two historic eventslater this year:

  • Coppa dei Campioni, Jesolo (I) - The famous Coppa dei Campioni will be run for the second time for Historic karts at Jesolo from 24 to 26 May.

  • CIK-FIA Historic Super Cup, Varennes (F) - During the CIK-FIA KZ World Championship to be held at Varennes on 22 September, historic karts ranging from 1956 to 1984 will take part in demonstration runs within the framework of the CIK-FIA Historic Super Cup. The number of participants will be limited to 36, with priority given to the oldest karts.

Best anticiaptes the Australian Vintage Kart Prix will be the biggest vintage karting event yet held in the Southern Hemisphere.

kteq logoKTEQ Semi Trailer Rentals have already stepped up as a major sponsor and Ipswich City Council is supporting the event.

"A number of events will take place for all types of karts up to 1991. There will also be special events for guest drivers – some current V8 drivers are expected to take part – and for some of Australia’s top junior drivers using the equipment that was available to juniors in the 1980s."

Entries are expected from all corners of Australia and New Zealand, and some inquiries have already been received from Europe and the USA.
