F100 Nationals & KZ2 at HorsePower Heaven

David Sera and Matt Wall have taken out the 2009 Formula 100 National Championships in the Light and Heavy categories respectively. NZ hotshot Ryan Grant won the KZ2 class at the event at Todd Road.

KZ2 Added To 2010 F100 Titan Series

A KZ2 gearbox class is set to run alongside Formula 100 in next year's Titan series

F100 organiser Dominic Albanese is calling for interested drivers to get in contact with him so he can build a list and keep everyone informed of developments. Interested drivers should email Dominic at dom.1971@live.com

Meantime, the re-emergence of KZ2 in Australia seems to be well underway judging by the interest for the Horsepower Heaven meet later in the year, Albanese saying that it "looks set to be huge for gearbox".

Matthew Mills - A New Breed of F100 Driver

Matthew Mills is one of the new breed of Formula 100 Heavy Drivers.  Driving the new First Kart at round three of the Titan series at Todd Rd recently, Matthew took a great pole position in F100 Heavy, narrowly edging out Lachie Frampton.

In the sixteen lap final, Matthew followed Lachie for the entire race before making a move on the final lap and taking the win by just 0.3 seconds!  It was a great performance in a new kart.

Matthew will be a real threat for the title in Heavy when the Formula 100 Nationals race on October 31/November 1.

Albanese Interviewed by karting.co.uk

Alan Dove from the karting1.co.uk website interviewed F100 Titan Series promoter Dominic Albanese recently. It seems the poms are mighty impressed with the fact that Australia has such a strong and simple 100cc performance class happening, while they they struggle with the CIK's KF categories.

It's a good read - click HERE.

Formula 100 For Queensland?

Enjoying bumper fields at the Nationals and a strong series in Victoria, Formula 100 might be about to get off the ground in Queensland. An F100 'Come and Try' day is scheduled to run at Toowoomba this Saturday, December 13.

"We've already got about 15 guys interested in running the class" Ralph van Doorn informed KartSportNews. RV has a number of engines on their way to Queensland. These are now superceded (by the KF classes) ex-factory motors from the likes of Birel and de Bruijn. This allows for fast, proven 100cc engines without the cost of new motors.

Participants will be required to have a minimum B-grade AKA licence and will need to register their interest beforehand to get the final details. Phone Ralph van Doorn - 0418 547 265.

2008 Formula 100 Nationals

from AKA website karting.net.au

Young Victorian driver Adam Hughes has upstaged some of his more fancied rivals to take a commanding win in the Australian Formula 100 Titles at the Beckley Park International Karting Raceway in Geelong, Victoria today.

The 19-year-old from Mentone in Melbourne, Victoria won his first Australian title with a clear victory in the 21-lap championship final, just one week after finishing second while representing Australia at the IAME International Karting Challenge in Spain.

The win capped off a breakthrough season for the popular Kosmic driver, who was a regular top three contender all season and was making his first start in a major event in the Formula 100 category, arguably the fastest class in Australian karting.

“It’s an awesome feeling to get this win,” said Hughes.

“I’ve never won an Australian title, so it’s great to get the victory here today.

“The whole MKC team is really stoked and the Kosmic chassis was great all weekend – everyone at Super 1 Karting is very happy as well because it was a Kosmic 1-2.

Above: Local ace Daniel Richert had the pace in the heats but couldn't bridge the gap that Hughes built up in the opening laps of the final.
pic - Cooper's Photography, 0439 607 072

“This win definitely caps off the best year of my career and I feel that the Kosmic chassis has moved me up to the front of the field.

“It was great to race for Australia in Spain last weekend, so to win a green plate the very next weekend is a pretty special feeling.

“In Leopard Light, James (Sera, MKC-Kosmic team-mate) and I have both been running well all year. We ran 1-2 here at Geelong in the Victorian Open earlier this year and when James won the Nationals in Tassie I had the pace but not the luck.

“I haven't done much racing in Formula 100, but it all went to plan and I have to thank everyone that got me to this point after so many years of karting. I can’t wait to run that green and gold number one plate next year.”

Finishing second was local Geelong driver Daniel Richert, making it a 1-2 finish for Italian manufacturer Kosmic, while former Australian Rotax Light champion Hayden McBride came home in third place aboard his Gillard kart.

Another local Geelong favourite in Aaron Ivermee started the final from pole position ahead of Hughes, fastest qualifier David Sera and Cameron Thorpe.

But at the first corner it was Hughes who got the jump, followed by the Geelong pair of Ivermee and Richert while behind them, two of the pre-event favourites in Sera and defending champion Jason Burns crashed out in spectacular fashion.

While Richert and McBride both charged hard to haul in their younger rival, Hughes was able to maintain a sizeable gap over the entire race distance to claim the victory.

Thorpe was a fast finishing fourth after falling back as a result of the skirmish at the first corner, claiming the honour as the first brand new Arrow X1 chassis home.

Yet another Kosmic claimed fifth with a strong drive from Reece Kawitzki, followed by Ivermee, Mark Domaschenz, Matthew Hayes and Trent James.

2007 Australian Formula 3 champion and CAMS Gold Star winner Tim Macrow made a successful comeback to karting with a top 10 finish in the final in his Tony Kart after starting from the rear of the pack, some eight years since his last kart race.

Entry List - Formula 100 Nationals

The Formula 100 Nationals goes from strength to strength and will see a near capacity field battle for the green plate at Geelong on November 15-16.

31 Formula 100 drivers (and what an entry it is with the regular F100 guns joined by stars from other classes plus the likes of Tim Macrow making a return to karts) will compete in the Championship '150kg' division. An additional 18 drivers will race in the 163kg non-championship Heavy division where the winner takes home $1000. There will be various prizes distributed, including top Over 40 drivers.

Titan series promoter Dominic Albanese informed KartSportNews that the non-championship Heavy division will race as a separate field this year due to the increase in numbers in the class. If the Heavies had raced within the championship class, the category would have been massively oversubscribed.

Note to Support Classes: While the on-track action is F100 only on Friday, from 5:30pm to 8pm the venue will be available for support classes to set up their pit space and confirm entries.

Titan Formula 100 Series - Final Series Points

The Titan Formula 100 series concluded at the City of Melbourne Titles last weekend. Hayden McBride (Gillard) won the race, but second was Geelong's Daniel Richert (Kosmic), earning more than enough points to seal the Light division championship ahead of Aaron Ivermee (Arrow) and Zeke Edwards (Kosmos).

Despite running Light at the final round, Dominic Albanese (One Kart) wrapped up the Heavy division, while Bobby Bourke (Kosmos) took out Over 40s

Sarron Caddy - Going Places Fast

Seventee-year old Sarron Caddy finished a remarkable 2nd in the first round of the Formula 100 Titan series at Oakleigh. Coming off grid 22 in an action packed and frenetic race, Sarron showed amazing speed and common sense to get back to second place, driving in what was just his second Formula 100 race.

What made this even more remarkable was that only hours earlier Sarron was involved in a sickening hide speed mutiple roll-over in the pre-final of Clubman Light. Through no fault of his own Sarron and his kart were launched into the air at the start finish line on the main staight. What occurred next horrified many onlookers as Sarron's leg was stuck in the kart as it barrel-rolled sideways and front ways several times.

Most believed that Sarron would have been seriously hurt as he lay on the infield grass for several minutes, unable to move. After being taken to the medical room Sarron, courageously turned up on the grid shortly after for the Formula 100 pre-final ready to race, his determination undeniable.

Race officials deemed that he may still be suffering side effects from the crash and removed him from the grid, much to Sarron's disapointment.

What followed in the Formula 100 final was an inspired drive from rear of grid to second place.

Sarron has continued to impress throughout the Titan Series including setting the fastest lap of the star studded final of round three at the Geelong Winter Cup. Keep your eye on this young man in upcoming races of Formula 100 and Clubman Light. The future looks bright for young Sarron!
