Wollongong Triple Challenge, Round 2
press release
Come rain, hail or shine was the call of the day at Wollongong City Raceway for the 2nd round of the WGE Triple Challenge on Sunday the 15th of August.
Over one hundred drivers battled the hourly changes in the weather, making kart setup an absolute nightmare for pit crews.
Tag Restricted Medium again provided some close racing with Kris Bail finishing 1st, Kyle Sandona 2nd & Daniel Smith coming in 3rd. Local Dad Darren Gillis, who normally races Restricted Superheavy at 200kg, gave the 30kg lighter Medium guys a run for their money finishing a creditable forth.
Andrew Kahl finished 1st in front of Thomas Miotto & Isaav Vaccarella in Rookies with Andrew winning two heats and the prefinal.
Mathew Ferraro was looking at a convincing win all day in Tag Medium until Wollongong driver Dion Fischper put it together in the final, finishing 1st, Dominic Marciano 2nd and Mathew 3rd.
Rotax Heavy was shaping up for a show down with Nicholas Crawshay & Grant Donley claiming the front row for the heats. Nicholas Finished 1st ahead of Jay Waugh & Nick Karmalis. Grant came home forth. Private Fleet sponsored the race with the 1st & 2nd place getters being refunded their race entry.
Darcy Kondopirakis led one of the most talented Senior National Light fields Wollongong has seen in years. Darcy won the final in front of Logan Reiter and Mitchell Abrahall.
Senior National Heavy saw Bradley Moss win all three heats and the Prefinal only to DNF the final in a mixup with several other drivers at Canteen corner. Andrew Dorahy finished 1st with newcomer Jacob Maher picking up 2nd.
Karting World’s Adam Hunter had a clean sweep of the Clubman Heavy class finishing 1st in all the races. Dominic Marciano & David Kermond finished 2nd and 3rd respectively all day as well.
A disappointing Jmax rollup saw Luke Spinley & James Taylor finish 1st & 2nd.
Rotax Light Lap record holder Mick Robson showed the field how it's done by winning outright all day. Ryan Rannard placed 2nd and IKD tyre draw winner Lee Adams finishing 3rd.
A series of DNF’s & DNS’s plagued both Anthony Gamauf & Jordan Zammit in Junior National Light with both finishing 2nd & 3rd behind “Mr Consistancy” Sebastian Johnston in the final.
Yet again local lad Cody Gillis took charge of the huge Midget field finishing 1st in all five races, closely followed by Jessie Attard & Nathan Rourke.
Clubman Light driver Alex Henry worked his way up through the heats to take out the final ahead of Daniel Nolan & Warren White. Many of the drivers in the field competed in two classes with Alex being one of them.
Junior National Heavy showed the crowd some close racing with several trains forming throughout the races. Alexandra Lawrence gave the boys something to think about with a solid performance but couldn’t break the strangle hold James Taylor, Joshua Seiffert & Nicklaus Lichenburger had on 1st, 2nd & 3rd.
Wollongong’s next race meeting is on the 19th September and with it being a round of the Tag Series it should not be missed.
