Info From AKA AGM & August Conference

AKA press release

The Australian Karting Association held it’s Annual General Meeting and August conference in Queensland last weekend.

Following the AGM, the National Executive remained unchanged with Richard Erdmann and Simon Whiting being re-elected into the positions of President and Vice-President respectively. Treasurer Max Laybutt and Secretary Pam Arnett were unopposed in the elections and remain in their current roles.

Arnett’s long-standing service to the sport in her various roles across Victorian and National karting was also recognised when she was awarded life membership of the Association. She becomes the 26th life member of the AKA.

A number of decisions were made during the National Karting Council (NKC) conference. One such decision was the clarification of the rules regarding clutches in the Clubman and National categories.

The list of clutches approved for use in the various classes is contained in Addendum #38 (as can be viewed under the regulations page on the AKA website www.karting.net.au by clicking here). Clutches in the Clubman and National categories will become compulsory effective January 1, 2009.

The Formula JMA category has been granted a National Championship status from 2009 onwards with the Australian Championship for the class to be held at the annual Rotax Nationals event. The class will also move to the MOJO D2 tyre as of January 1, 2009, bringing it inline with other Formula JMA classes across the world and making it easier for Australian drivers to compete overseas.

Currently, the New South Wales and Victorian State Secretaries are testing the new SmartCard licencing system, in conjunction with their current procedure, with the anticipation of implementation across the country during early 2009.

The Western Australia delegate provided a presentation with regards to the host venue for the 2011 National Sprint Kart Championships to be held in the state. The Tiger Kart Club was selected as the host club at the Cockburn International Raceway.

With the implementation of new technology for the sealing of components, competitors are reminded that all engine and chassis tags along with tyre bar codes must remain in tact and any discrepancies should be reported to an official prior to leaving the in grid.

Overall, Erdmann believed there were a number of positives to come out of the AGM and the conference.

“I’m pleased to say that we have a stable Executive at a National level and I’m looking forward to working with the National Executive and the National Karting Council over the next 12 months,” said Erdmann.

“Clutches has been a hot topic on everyone’s minds over the past few months and I’m happy to say it appears that we been able to compile a suitable list of approved clutches in the respective classes to ensure a smooth transition for our members.

“Since the June conference the NKC has been working with the Australian karting industry to ensure the Midgets, Rookies and Junior categories remain strong for many years to come. I’m pleased to report there are a number of concepts available, all of which will continue to be discussed between the industry and the NKC.”
