Kiwi To Tackle Oz Rotax Championship

Top New Zealand karter Ryan Urban will cross the Tasman to contest the Sparco Australian Rotax Max Nationals.

The multi NZ champion (above - pic by Fast Company/Andrew Bright-Ultrapix) currently leads the 2008 Rotax Max Challenge of New Zealand in the Rotax Light class. Former New Zealand World Final representative Tony Chambers, from New Zealand Rotax Max importer Right Karts, reckons he will do well.

“I certainly do, in fact I think Ryan has a real chance at the Australian title" Chambers said this week. "In the past, the Kiwis who have competed at this meeting have struggled a bit with kart set up due to the different tyre run in Australia. But now with Australia running the Mojo D2, the same tyre we run in in the Max Challenge here, we're not at the same disadvantage."

Chambers is one of New Zealand's original Rotax Max Challenge representatives and still one of the quickest drivers. He will crew for Urban in Melbourne (this duo also looks after Scott McLaughlin when he races in NZ), bringing with him valuable experience from a previous Kiwi assault at the track.

"In 2006 I crewed for Simon Evans at the same track, contesting the City Of Melbourne titles. After winning the Pre-Final Simon was on for a win in the Final, and was half way through a pass on Bart Price for the lead on the last lap when Bart lost a rear wheel. Simon had to take to the infield to miss Bart and that gave the win to multiple Australian kart champ David Sera, with Simon finishing second. So with that experience in mind we are aiming for the top step this time.”

The Rotax will be held at VACC Park on September 5 to 7.
