Rogers Takes Third Win

by Mark Jones

He had to come from behind this time but Michael Rogers picked off the fast starting Tim Scarman to take a third win at the Australian non-gearbox Superkart Championships.

The two leaders finished clear of the field with Shaun Jones moving clear in third after a set-up miscalculation saw Jason McIntyre fall off top three pace. Kristian Stebbing race home in fifth position with Doug Savage moving through the pack in the wet to claim sixth position with Darren Tyler overcoming early pace dramas to be seventh ahead of Brad Stebbing.

Rogers will a take a comfortable nine point lead over Scarman into the final race of the championships.

The Rotax Heavies again battled fiercely with Mark Wicks taking his third win of the weekend leading Ryan Felmingham and the repaired and re-motivated Rod Clarke. Brendan Luneman dropped back several places overall, not quite catching the leading Juniors. Ron Goldfinch and Chris Jewell continued their comebacks after disappointing Saturday runs, following Luneman home to the chequer.

Like Rogers, Wicks holds a nine point advantage over Felmingham, top four class position will secure the title.

The Juniors saw Sean Whitfield's recovery drive continue, taking a second win for the weekend, but of all the points leaders faces the most difficult fight, just two points separating himself and fellow thirteen-year-old Mitchell Abbott, who finished second in race 3 ahead of a devastated Rhys Newman, now out of the title race following his fuel related retirement in Race 2.

The final race of the day is a seven lap bonus points race with the result to decide all three titles.
