Hyper Racer Championship - Round 6

press release

Round 6 of the Hyper Racer 2008 Australian Championship was run at Sandown in Victoria.

Russ Occhipinti won the day in the Lights Division ahead of Dean Crooke and Kristian Stebbing. In the Heavy Division, Mark Wicks finished ahead of Patrick Atherton and Chris Jewell.

Dean Crooke set the fastest lap of the meeting and a new lap record at 1:32.7398 (subject to official confirmation).

The day was a mixed bag for the drivers, the rain and standing water on Sunday making the day one that most of the drivers will want to forget. "You can't see shit out there" said one. It was survival of the fittest. With zero visibility, a bumpy and unpredictable racing surface, airboxes full of water, engines behaving erratically due to swallowing water, frozen hands and feet, most drivers wished they had stayed at home. A huge pile up in the final, ended the race for 5 drivers, with some copping big damage bills.

Wicks and Occhipinti held on to their mounts and avoided any carnage to win their respective divisions, while Trounson and Cavallin were victims of the race 4 pile up, sustaining significant damage to their vehicles.

Chris Jewell missed the last race when he was taken to hospital after feeling unwell. He was released later in the evening, the turn being attributed to dehydration. Considering the monsoonal conditions, maybe he should have tried driving with his mouth open.
