DETAILS:
The Southern Go-kart Club will unveil its latest innovation in karting - a pair of hand controlled karts - in the lead up to the annual City of Adelaide Titles at the Bolivar Raceway next weekend.

Designed for use by drivers who have minimal use of their lower body and legs the hands controlled karts are believed to be the first karts in Australia to use an FIA approved steering wheel and throttle mechanism.

Southern Go-kart Club President David Kissock believes the program provides the club the opportunity for those with a physical disability or injury to enjoy the thrills and freedom of kart racing.

“This program is a great opportunity for the Club to showcase to the wider community and the rest of Australia our fantastic sport but more importantly gives the opportunity for those less fortunate than us to also enjoy the thrills and freedom of kart racing,” said Kissock.

“It also provides a valuable insight for these drivers as to kart or vehicle control by hand controls so that when they eventually drive on our roads they already have a sound knowledge.”

The karts will be unveiled at the Bolivar Raceway next Tuesday morning (July 22) where representatives from the Wheelchair Sports Association of South Australia will get behind the wheel.

Next Tuesday’s unveiling of the hand-controlled karts will be a part of the lead up to the 2008 City of Adelaide Titles to be held at the venue on July 27/28.

The City of Adelaide Titles is one of the longest running blue ribbon events in Australian karting. With over $6,000 of cash and prizes up for grabs in the two ‘Pro’ categories for Junior and Senior drivers the racing will be full of action across the weekend.

The Bolivar Raceway is located on Summer Road, Bolivar. Racing will be held from 9am on both Saturday July 27 and Sunday July 28. Admission is free for spectators.
