karting info and updates from here and around the world...

  • UPDATED - Series regulations for both the Australian Kart Championship and Rotax Pro Tour have been amended. If you're a competitor in either of these National series, you should read the series regs and take note of updates in red text. Both documents can be found on the KA website:
  • PAT ON THE BACK - There was a great piece in Paul Griffiths' race report from Oakleigh's April club day races (full report and pics HERE) regarding this "family" we call karting: "Since I have a little spot here to editorialize, can I just give karting a bit of a pat on the back for being such a great sport for parents to get involved in with their kids, as well as being a way of making lifelong friends and building character through the triumphs and adversity it delivers. So far this year I have made it to Clipsal in Adelaide, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, the National karting round at Geelong a few weeks ago, the Phillip Island Historics, and the Phillip Island round of Supercars. At each of these events I have caught up with friends made through go karting, and watched kids I knew as go karters go on to bigger and better things in Motorsport. Even if you never do that, make the most of the time you spend karting with your kids – it’s over before you know it."

  • VIDEO - Here's a great video of stuff you don't always get to see - behind the scenes at the first round of the European Championships at Sarno in Italy recently. It was produced by Manuela Nicoletti, the 2014 CIK-FIA Photo of the Year winner.

  • QLD STATES - The second round of the 2017 Queensland Kart Championship has been confirmed for Mackay on November 25-26. Karting Queensland posted the following on Facebook:

    "Hello all. As you are all aware we as a state have had a hard time trying to reallocate a date for the postponed Mackay round. So as we have thrown around several strategies to try and fit this meeting back in and keep it profitable for all. As a joint effort by the state body and all clubs involved we are pleased to announce that the dates are as follows.
       *  June 30 / July 1st & 2nd Will still remain as Ipswich’s round.
       *  November 25th & 26th Will be the second round at Mackay.
    We understand that this is not a perfect fit and that this may limit numbers to the Mackay round as it is not first as intended and now not in the school holidays. With the state trying to limit the financial burden now taken on by Mackay we have once again as a state voted for Mackay to hold the 2018 State Cup to help ease this financial burden created by the cyclone Debbie postponement. As we only have a limited time till the date allocated to Ipswich we need to start planning and getting subregs [sic] sorted as to make this a great event for all. Thanks for your understanding hope to see you all there.:

Spain's racing federation said the accident was being investigated. Two-time Formula One champion Alonso tweeted that he was "devastated" by the news." • KA CLARIFICATION - Karting Australia has issued a clarification regarding 'weighted adjustments' for Vintage kart time trials. Basically, it's not allowed. "The Vintage Committee does not classify Vintage Kart drivers by height, weight, age, sex or ability. It classifies Vintage Karts into the relevant ERA's and class structure from that ERA as raced in Australia. The Vintage Karting Class Rules reflect this position. The Time Trail is included in the Class Rules to provide the Vintage Karter with a forum to demonstrate their kart’s performance in a spirited, safe and fun controlled manor and is not intended as a high level graded competition. “Weight Adjusted Time Trial Events” for Vintage Karts of different eras are beyond the scope of the Vintage Karting Class Rules and accordingly are not permitted to be conducted." "As a further incentive we are inviting all those senior drivers who still have Yamaha 100S or SC engines to come along - we will issue a day licence for the competition and tech details are in the flyer" the club published. Despite no longer being a KA affilitated club, "AKA licence holders are welcome as are all visiting club members".

  • TRAINING - Karting SA will hold an Officials Training Course at the Southern Go Kart Club on Wednesday May 31st. This is an opportunity for existing officials to brush up on their skills and also for new officials to join the team. The session runs from 7pm to 9pm. • THANK YOU - Massive THANK YOU to all the volunteers who make race meetings work!

  • PRO SHOW - The Los Angeles Karting Championship will conduct "Pro Show" events on the Saturday evening of four of the series rounds. Pro Show will be similar to that of a Supercross event - each category will qualify to determine the race groups for a Prefinal. The Stock Honda and X175 groups will be split into two Prefinals, with those results determining the line-up for the main events. The top-10 from each Prefinal transfer with the rest of the field moved to a Last Chance Qualifier. Those who finish inside the top-five move on to the main event with a total of 25-drivers set to battle as the sun sets. "We want to capture the feel and excitement of a Supercross race and bring it to karting," says Willy Musgrave, LAKC President.
