AWC Academy Report: AKC Round 3

press release 19 May 2016

Both Junior AWC Motorsport Academy drivers showed their more experienced counterparts the way at round 3 of the Australian Kart Championships at the Monarto Karting complex over the weekend.

Jackson Callow performed the best of the academy drivers in the KA2 class with a very determined 7th place in the final.

Callow had never been to South Australia, let alone seen the track before Friday’s practice, and if that was not enough of a hurdle to start with, he was only able to complete 16 laps in practice due to an overheating engine that finally seized.

The young Tasmanian qualified 15th on Saturday morning in his first real crack at the track, however it was the heat races that he was able to produce some determined driving to forge his way forward in each heat. An unfortunate DNF in heat 3 meant that he would start the final from grid 15. The end result of 7th was Callow’s best result in the series so far.

Lochie Dalton, competing in the KA4 Junior class, also scored his best result of the national series with an 11th place finish. Dalton also had to do it the hard way after being involved in a first lap crash in qualifying meaning he would start all four heats from 30th in the 32 kart field.

The St Patricks college student carved his way through the field in each heat to claim a final grid starting spot of 16th. In the final he showed he had the pace to move even further forward and claimed 11th by the finish.

Brody Appleby and Nathan Zuj, both driving in the X30 class, showed some good pace in Friday practice with Zuj topping the time sheets in practice 3, however both were unable to reproduce the pace in qualifying which meant the pair would start the heats again from the mid pack.

Appleby had the best of the heat races with finishes of 9, 12, 8, 11, however a first lap crash in the final sent the North Western Kart Club member to the rear of the field and ended any chance of a top ten finish.

Zuj, who had heat results of 23, 19, 10 and 13th, started the final from grid 19 and was able to climb up to 13th by race end.

The team would like to once again thank the following for their support of the Academy, Motorsports Tasmania, Gowans Motor Group, SRT Logistics and James Sera Karting Centre.
