South Australian State Kart Championship, Round 2

from Jason Fewins  3 May 2016

South Australia’s top karters were in action, last Sunday at Mount Gambier’s Glenburnie Raceway for Round Two of the Alpha Industries SA Kart Championships.  The two day event catered for drivers from as young as seven through to senior drivers with years of karting experience.

With entries pushing close to 100 drivers spread over 9 classes, there was plenty of racing action on offer over the weekend.  Blue skies and outstanding conditions welcomed competitors to the track on the opening day of the event.  Two practice outings followed by a qualifying session kicked off the race meeting before racing got underway mid-morning on the Saturday.

Cadet 9s saw 10 young up and coming talented drivers battle it out over the course of the weekend.  Ben Holliday and Rock Han were the two drivers setting the pace with Holiday winning the first three events, while Han saved his best for last dominating in the damp and challenging conditions in the final.  Ky Hubner, early in the weekend had trouble coming to grips with the tricky Mount Gambier circuit, but overcome all those challenges to finish third in the final ahead of Wimmera driver Robbie Turmine and Whyalla’s Angus McKenna.  Local driver Brock Fewins qualified well putting in the fourth quickest lap and finished his first State Level race meeting in 6th place.

Cadet 12s was a strong field of 15 drivers and the talent in in class was on display from the moment the kids hit the track.  Adelaide driver Blake Purdie put in the benchmark time early in qualifying before local youngster Bronson Boult stamped his authority on the class to secure the pole position as top qualifier.  Purdie was relegated back to second while team mate Christie Cowie rounded out the top three.  During the heat races Purdie made the most of his track position by taking the first two race wins while in the third, under wet and damp conditions CRG driver Aaron Oliver shone bright driving from 11th to take the win and setup for a great final race.

At the green light Purdie took the lead while Oliver slotted into second and Boult third place.  Boult making his charge on lap 7 to get by Oliver and chase down the leader.  He ran out of laps before he could catch the Adelaide youngster and finished second while Sonic driver Ryan Morgan rounded out the podium in third after Zanardi driver Christian Cowie collided and ended Olivers run to the chequered flag on a pass attempt, on the last corner of the last lap.

KA4 Junior Light provided some of the closest racing of the weekend.  Hayden Jericho set the pace during qualifying and put his kart into the pole position early Saturday morning with Declan Morrison and Michael Jones rounding out the top three.     Heat wins to Hutchins and Morrison set up a final to remember with a number of drivers capable of taking home the top prize.  As the flag dropped ending the final Jack Hutchins took the win in a drag race to the line finishing ahead of Jericho by two hundredths of a second with third place getter Declan Morrison putting in the fastest lap of the race to finish less than two tenths behind Jericho.

KA3 Senior Light saw 10 drivers suit up and contest the class.  Young gun Jacob Dowson set the benchmark with a hot lap to claim his spot on at the front of the field while Ben Delaney and Luke Marquis battled it out for the other spot on the front row.  Heat wins to Delaney put him in a great position at the end of day one, while Marquis took the honours early Sunday leading into the final.  Dowson found some extra pace from his Tony Kart during the fourth and final heat to take the round win, relegating Marquis to second and fast finishing Jayden Sharrad into third.

KA3 Senior Heavy was dominated by Hamish Ribarits.  Taking three heat wins including the final and a second placing he was the benchmark driver most of the weekend.  Fastest qualifier and Heat 2 winner Tyler Morrison was his biggest challenger but a DNF in heat one as well as the final made his weekend that little bit harder.  Sparky Marquis earnt his second placing with three top three finishes while Anthony Di Mauros consistency helped him to finish in third place.

KA3 Senior Masters was a class with mixed results.  Sparky Marquis qualified ahead of the field and backed up his efforts with a heat one win and two second placings.  David Rinaldi also had some time in the winner’s circle, and finished 1st in two races but it was Simon Smith, in the final on Sunday who left the track as round winner ahead of Mark Goode in second place and Rinaldi finishing in third.  Pole sitter Marquis ended the weekend in 4th place and Daniel Bowden rounded out the top 5 drivers with two third placings during the event.

TaG125 Light was the largest field for the weekend.  26 entrants all trying to find some clear track to qualifying in was their first challenge.  Adelaide driver Paul Pittam used his race experience and kart setup to qualify in first, take heat wins in races one, two and three but a DNF in the final meant the only slip up to a near perfect weekend. In fact there were 10 drivers not to finish the 20 lap final on Sunday afternoon.  4 local drivers were amongst the experienced field and it was young gun Kirby Hillyer who led home the contingent of drivers.  Hillyer Qualified inside the top 5 Saturday and rarely found himself far from the leaders. Taking the lead of the race in the final on lap 6 Hillyer then set about gapping the rest of the field while they fought amongst themselves for the minor placings.  Daniel Price followed Hillyer over the finish line some 4 seconds behind and Jayden Sharrad in third.  Regular competitor at the Mount Gambier circuit Ashley Lear was amongst the class contenders for a race win in the final heat, until kart contact from behind pushed him off the track and relegated from 4th back to  11.

TaG 125 Heavy driver Luke Bergen qualified ahead of the field, and two second placings and a heat win in wet and wild conditions Sunday put him in a great position for the concluding final. Four different drivers scored race wins during the weekend, but Matthew Hall used his wealth of experience to win the class crossing the line first ahead of Andrew Cash and Blake Mooney with Luke Bergens in 4th and Bradley Ellis rounding out the top 5. Simon Enright and Scott Harper also drove well putting in strong drives to add to their championship tallies.

TaG 125 Masters was controlled by Craig Henderson.  Clean sweeping his competition by taking pole position, Heat wins in races one two and three as well as the final.   He was challenged by Danny Somerville and Warren Nietz who rounded out the podium as the race ended.  Whyalla driver Scott Hubner showed good speed to take home a third placing on Sunday morning but could not repeat that result in the afternoon having to settle for a 4th placing. James Coles rounded out the top 5.

Mount Gambier Kart Club will come alive again on the 22nd of May as they open their gates to drivers for the next round of the 2016 club championship. The club wishes to invite any prospective and previous club members who have karts, new or old, to bring them out to the next club day with the possibility of showcasing them in a demonstration style event at the conclusion of the days racing.  Anyone interested in taking up this opportunity should contact the club or one if its members to confirm their intent.
