“Car and Lehane clean sweep while mixed results upset front runners”

The wins have been shared across both local Sydney based drivers and interstate Pro Tour regulars in the opening day of racing at round three at Eastern Creek. Chris Farkas (Rotax 125 Heavy), Kai Allen (Mini Max) and Joshua Car (DD2) all took clean sweeps in their respective classes while Pierce Lehane (Rotax 125 Light) made a stunning return to the series in new colours with the reigning National Champion putting himself at the front of the field in all of the events during the day.

Micro Max

Canberran Sebastian Ruiz was the early pacesetter for the weekend in Micro Max, taking pole position with a 46.461 ahead of debutant Alex Ninovic. Ryan Tomsett and Harry Arnett would make up the second row with Macka Hazard and Emerson Vincent to start from fifth and sixth. The race wins were shared across the three heats between Ninovic and Ruiz with the latter taking two of the three victories. Heat two saw an early interruption with a red flag incident on lap one. All drivers involved were cleared by trackside medical staff. Harry Arnett made a good showing for the day, taking second in all of the ten lap events.

Rotax 125 Heavy

Rotax 125 Heavy proved to be a battle of two at the front with Queensland pair Chris Farkas and Lane Moore finishing first and second respectively in all four track appearances from qualifying through to all of the heat races. Farkas took pole by 0.2 seconds and maintained a consistent lead and gap between he and Moore throughout the day, stretching it out to as far as 0.4 seconds at the end of heat one. The remaining positions within the top five were shared throughout a handful of drivers across the day with locals Shay Mayes and Damon Schofield featuring on at least two of the three occasions. Following on from recent successful outings, Benjamin Ritchie had a mixed day with his best heat race result being fifth in the second sprint race.

Junior Max Trophy

After showing an impressive display of form on debut to the series at Warwick in February, Travis Worton went about establishing himself as a driver to chase yet again, taking pole in Junior Max Trophy with a 40.931 ahead of Zayd Tones with Callum Bishop and Jaiden Pope starting third and fourth. Starting from fifth, Worton’s Warwick challenger, Brodie Whitmore took the win in heat one by 0.1 seconds over Worton and Tones with Kiwi Samuel Wright finishing fourth. Heat two and three proved to be an exact copy of each other with regards to the top five finishing positions as Worton claimed the win over Brodie Whitmore and Jaiden Pope with Zayd Tones and Callum Bishop completing that top five.

DD2 Masters

Using just 4:45 minutes of an available eight minutes in qualifying was enough to secure pole position for Scott Howard with a 39.819, 0.1 seconds ahead of Klinton Hancey with Howard’s team mate Troy Bretherton qualifying third and Mark Flood fourth. Starting out of fifth, Lee Mitchener managed victory in the first heat race by 1.9 seconds over Howard and that would prove to be the first of two race wins for Mitchener as he took victory in heat three. Howard and Bretherton finished first and second respectively in heat two with just 0.08 seconds separating the pair however contact and an unfortunate incident between the two in the final heat race whilst being engaged in a battle with eventual winner Lee Mitchener would see both fail to finish. Victorian Ash Seward came through to take second from Lee Adams and Josh Willett with Danny Wright in fifth.

Mini Max

Victorian Kai Allen proved to be undefeated in all outings of Mini Max throughout the day, starting with a pole position by 0.1 seconds over fellow statesman Hugh Barter, Adam Tomsett and Kiwi Connor Davison. The first two heat races proved to be a titanic battle between Allen and Tomsett, finishing first and second respectively. Micro Max graduate Adrian Haak interrupted the battle in heat three taking second ahead of Angus Giffin with Tomsett settling for fourth. Series points leader James Wharton experienced a mixed day, qualifying in ninth before finishing all three heat races inside the top five.

Rotax 125 Light

In his first meeting back in the Pro Tour since the end of 2015 and since switching teams, Pierce Lehane set about returning to the form of his past in the series, taking pole position by a slender margin of just 0.03 seconds over points leader Cody Gillis. Lehane set about creating more of a buffer between he and Gillis in heat one, taking the win by 0.3 seconds with Brad Jenner driving through from sixth to take third ahead of Wayne Bourke and Liam Ford with Nicholas Andrews finishing sixth in his first meeting since making a team switch.

After qualifying third, Kody Garland finished the first heat in ninth however from there he would join the battle at the front of the field between Lehane and Gillis, taking third position in heat two and three. Wayne Bourke backed up his fourth place finish in heat one to take fourth and sixth in heat two and three respectively with multiple drivers sharing a finish within the top ten across the day’s events.

Junior Max

Alec Morse was the early star in Junior Max, taking pole position by 0.1 seconds over Dylan Hollis with a 40.414 with the margin separating second to third and subsequently third to fourth being just 0.06 seconds for Nathan Herne and Cody Brewczynski. Reece Cohen showed good form in just his third meeting in the open Junior Max class to qualify fifth. Brewczysnki managed to pick up the win in heat one before finishing the remaining two heats in second and third respectively.

Morse capitalised on his pole position start in heat two, picking up the race win as Brewczysnki settled for second over Hollis and Lucas Lichtenberger with Cameron Longmore in fifth. The charge of Morse was brought to a sudden premature conclusion in heat three after being involved in an incident in the final corner on lap three which ended his race. It would go on to be won by Nathan Herne from Hollis, Brewczynski and Longmore.

DD2

In only his third meeting in the DD2 category, Joshua Car delivered a dominant performance with the young driver first taking pole position with a 39.286, a mere 0.06 seconds ahead of Adam Lindstrom and Daniel Rochford. Whilst there were multiple changes in the lead across the course of the three races, Car managed to come out on top on all three occasions with Lindstrom doing enough to take second in two of the three races. Series points leader Troy Woolston qualified fifth before finishing with three heat race results inside the top six.

In his first meeting since switching chassis brand, Daniel Rochford had his share of time in the lead of the races before settling for fourth and two sixth place finishes with Chris Bregonje also showing steady progress during the day, finishing as high as third by heat three.
