Victorian Superkarts Round 1

from Rolf Greve 9 February 2016

The 2016 Victorian Superkart season kicked of at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit on February 6. This year also see’s the Victorian Superkart Club celebrate 40 years of racing, having started out as the Victorian Road Race division under the A.K.A.

The 250 Internationals welcomed a former Stock Honda driver Jamie Macdonald to the fold. Jamie started his Superkart racing in 2011 as a Junior in the Non Gearbox class and has steadily climbed the class ranks.

Unfortunately, all the 250 drivers managed to fine tune their karts to a standstill at some point during the meeting, clearly using this first outing to try some ideas thought up over the off season.

We’re sure to see some great pace and racing at round two. A great finish for Matt Bass who showed some amazing speed during the day.

In the 250 Nationals it was an easy day for young Tyler Williams driving a well prepared kart ahead of Raff Pironti fighting some gremlins and Peter Kay coming to terms with his kart.

Tyler (also a former Non gearbox Junior) showed good form last year in his first drives of the 250 and will certainly go well again this year.

The 125cc Gearbox karts provided some interesting racing with Jarrod Lethborg and Lee Filliponi swapping wins throughout the day while Geoff Lawrence was coming to terms with a new kart.

Non Gearbox Light saw Russ Occhipinti and Sonny Perera dice for the lead all day while a little further back Brayden Bailey, James Burge and Travis Jones fought over the scraps like seagulls outside a chip shop.

Non Gearbox Heavy, Jarrod Sanfilippo coasted home to a comfortable win while Aland Dodge did his best to take it to him and setting a new lap record of 1:58.7916 for the 4.5 kM circuit.

A little further back in the pack Mario Florio, David Murphey and Rod Clarke were doing their best to break up the party at the front.

Stock Honda provided the best entertainment for the day. Up front it was current National Champion Juzzy Ford, current Club Champion Nathan Pryor and new to gearbox racing and runner up in last years driver of the year, Tim Clarke, all trying to outfox one another in the final run to the flag. In all four heats it was neck to neck across the line.

Superkarting returns to Phillip Island on April 9 and the club is also involved in a static display at the FPM Motorexpo being held at the Royal Exhibition building in Carlton from April 8th to 10th where you can find out a lot more about Superkarting.
