MSA Change Cadet Tyre To Slow The Class

  18 January 2016

The Motor Sports Association UK (MSA) has changed the tyre to be used in the British Cadet classes to help slow the category down.

This is very much the opposite to what has happened for the Cadet classes here in Australia this year.

An open tender was launched in July last year with a mandate for a half-second increase in average lap time. Dunlop provided a tyre that met this and will be the sole tyre in the class for three years, from January 2017.

"It has been decided almost a year in advance to help manufacturers develop new 2017 chassis that are suited to the new tyre" the MSA stated in a press release.

The MSA declared their own testing had shown the tyre to be very durable, with minimal performance drop-off. Tyres were put through the equivalent of 500 laps of use during the testing process.

"Consequently one set of tyres could theoretically be used for multiple race meetings, and the environmental impact will also be reduced by limiting the number of tyres disposed of."

MSA's Simon Blunt said the MSA was impressed with the quality of product from all tenderers.

"This made the selection process tricky, but thorough testing revealed that the new tyre proposed by Dunlop exceeded the criteria. This left the Panel in unanimous agreement.”

The MSA believes the choice will both reduce costs in the Cadet classes and enhance the driving experience, leading to better and more exciting racing.

The 3-year fixed price for a full set is £109.70+VAT (AUS $228).

In further UK news, Super One and the MSA have announced the 2016 MSA British Junior and Senior Kart Championships will be a one-engine series using OTK's new homologated Vortex OK engine and Vega tyres.

There will also be a new MSA Championship this year for KZ1 running the existing Bridgestone tyre.
