2016 KA Rule Change Summary

  18 November 2015

Karting Australia released the 2016 Manual yesterday. Again, there are a number of changes, though nothing to the extent of 12 months ago!

The 2016 rule book refers to a number of documents and references to be found on KA’s website www.karting.net.au. Quite a number of these have not yet been made public, but will be available to download prior to the rules coming into effect.

A summary of some of the key changes is below. Note: this is not a comprehensive list! KA karters need to make themselves aware of any and all rule changes relevant to them.

  • Name changes for several classes (initially this looks confusing, but it does put several categories into a more logical order. See the graphic below, plus yesterday's post HERE)
  • Can only use oils approved by KA (the list is yet to be made public. But it has to be asked: Why does oil have to be 'approved'? And how will KA know you are using an approved oil or not?)
  • Masters age back to 40+ (makes sense, ‘cos who wants to be known as an “old” karter at 35?!)
  • All Cadet and Junior drivers must wear rib protection (Neck braces and chest protection are recommended)
  • States have more flexibility to run their own show regarding state cups, zonal and club level events (see yesterday’s post HERE. This would seem a positive move – eg: race formats for a large metro meeting are not necessarily the right way to go for a small country event)
  • Cadets and Juniors wishing to compete in National Championship/Series must comply with the provisions of the KA Elite Junior Participation Policy (whatever that is!)
  • 10-second time penalty for start procedure infringements
  • Stopping on the track (eg, spin/incident): If you can’t drive off within 15 seconds, you must exit the kart and get it and yourself to a safe place (makes sense – how many times have  stalled karts still been on the track when the leaders come by a lap later?)
  • Starting of a kart engine during Drivers’ Briefing is strictly prohibited
  • Cadet9 added to Australian Kart Championship (see previous post HERE)
  • Change of tyre brand/type for several classes (see previous post HERE)
  • Addition of Vortex Rok DVS to the classes now known as KA1 and KA2, plus Junior and Open Performance (see previous post HERE)
  • State regulations can overide the ineligibility of A or B Grade licensed drivers earning points or prizes in TaG 125 Restricted at club meetings
  • Introduction of TaG Restricted Super Heavy (@207kg for EVO engines, 202kg for all others)
  • TaG 125 parity weight adjustments (subject to confirmation prior to end of 2015)
  • Confirmation that racing of Vintage karts is prohibited and “There will be no overtaking at high speed.”
  • Lithgow Ladies event and Brian Farley Memorial have lost National Cup/Trophy status
  • plus lots of other stuff - read the document! (download from KA site HERE)
