  • Motor racing can be a cruel sport. Everyone who pulls on a crash helmet and heads out onto the race track is aware there is a risk. Jules Bianchi was born into a racing family that was already too aware of the danger. His grandfather was seriously injured in a crash at LeMans, and his grandfather's brother, Lucien (who raced in Formula One), was killed at the same venue. Tragically, the promising Jules lost his life nine months after crashing his F1 car in Japan last year. Before achieving success in car racing, Jules was a standout in the French and European karting championships. He is survived by his parents Philippe and Christine, brother Tom and sister Mélanie. He was 25.

  • We all know it costs money to go racing. The higher up the ladder, the more cash is required. The raconteur.net website calculates that an exceptionally talented driver will still need €8m (AUS$11.8m) to go from karting to F1. They've even quoted Mercedes F1 team boss Toto Wolff: “It’s not possible to bring that cost down... so you need to have a sugar daddy or a rich daddy.” Wolff says he is considering reinstating the Mercedes young driver programme. But these development programmes cost money and, again, someone has to pay for it. NZ's Mitch Evans tells it like it is: “I’ve had offers from a number of top teams, including Red Bull and Ferrari, to go on their junior schemes, but I still had to provide some money” he's quoted. “Every driver, whether it’s Carlos, whether it’s Daniel, it doesn’t matter who it is, they still have to bring some money and it is probably more than meets the eye. A lot of driver development schemes are smoke and mirrors in terms of the drivers paying to be there." Read the interesting (though, if you have F1 in your sights, somewhat depressing) article HERE.

  • 2-Track Challenge is under two weeks away!
