Ford Dominates Opening Title Round at SMP

team press release 15 July 2015

Williams Racing travelled to Sydney Motorsport Park for the opening round of the 2015 Shannon’s Nationals Australian Superkart Championship with immediate success. Both team drivers made the round podium with Jordan Ford dominating the 250cc National class to gain an early lead in this year’s title chase.

Ford, who is in his first full year of Superkart racing after making the switch from short circuit racing including CIK Stars of Karting, shook the Superkart establishment by smashing the previous existing lap record by three seconds and winning all four of the races run with little drama, apart from a temperature sensor problem in the first race and the main jet falling out of the carburettor in the final.

Such was his pace all weekend, he won by more than thirty seconds in the two of the races, dicing with several of the faster 250cc International drivers for most of the weekend.

Jordie Ford: "The kart was a jet all weekend! We made a few setup changes during the weekend but they were only small tweeks. In the final the engine started playing up off the start line and I got swamped into turn one. It took me a few laps to adjust my driving style to suit the engine as it would only rev at a certain range. When we got back to the pits the main jet was sitting in the bottom of the bowl! Bring on Phillip Island."

Teammate Dale Williams also had a great weekend in his first race since the Phillip Island round of the nationals last year, finishing third overall. Williams was off the pace early as he got comfortable with his new Anderson chassis that handled vastly different from the Stockman chassis he has campaigned in recent years. Setup and tuning changes throughout the weekend had him well positioned in the final before his gear lever broke with two laps to go, forcing him to shift by pulling the lever directly next to the engine. He limped around but dropped from second to fourth.

Dale Williams: "I struggled to get a feel for the kart early, just super responsive compared to what I’m used and I looped it a couple of times in practice. We changed the rear track and brake bias and found a good setting. In the final we were on the pace until the gear change broke. It took me a couple of tries to work out which way to pull the lever but we got there in the end. Phillip Island can’t come soon enough but we need to find some speed as Jordie was on a different planet today."

The team will have one last chance to gain valuable testing & track time at Phillip Island before the September round of the Nationals in the form of the Victorian Superkart Club State Titles on August 15-16 where young Tyler Williams will run a third kart ahead of his Championship debut at Septembers final round.

Williams Racing would like to thank their sponsors Burbank Homes, Peter Ford Catering, Slipstream Signs, SCC, JMTF, R&J Batteries, Yamaha and Powerflow for their continued support of the team.
