Changes In Motorsport

  30 June 2015

Things never stay the same for very long in motor sport.

Announcements in the past 24 hours will result in significant changes for National Championship drag racing and CAMS circuit racing.

Firstly, Australia’s three major drag racing venues (Sydney Dragway, Willowbank Raceway and the Perth Motorplex) have broken away from the ANDRA Championship Drag Racing series and will promote their own national championship (read more about that on inpitlane HERE.

Meanwhile, CAMS has reshaped the Australian circuit racing landscape, slashing the number of Australian Championship classes to just four, dropping Formula Ford, F3 and Superkart titles in the process. At the time of writing, two of those four categories haven’t even run a race - Formula 4 (where CAMS is the promoter and owns all the cars...) will debut at the Townsville V8 round, while details of the CAMS Australian Endurance Championship are yet to be announced. Read more about this on the AutoAction site HERE. A ‘second phase’ consultation and report will be completed over the next three months with a focus on State and Club level racing.

While the drag racing announcement is not karting related, Superkarters will be left without a CAMS National Championship.

It seems dissatisfaction with a governing body is a phenomena not restricted to just sprint karting.

I know for a fact there are Karting Australia affiliated clubs that are hurting right now. Entry numbers are way down, threatening clubs’ financial viability.

But why is that?

Is it the result of KA’s Whole of Sport Review changes that came into effect this year?

Or is it the result of problems at local level with club management and/or poor member procurement and retention?

Or is there some other much bigger societal issue playing out here?

Change invariably results in at least short-term pain. Whether that change turns out to be for the better in the long run, well, we have to wait and see.

But one thing’s for certain - the motorsport landscape is forever in a state of flux.
