Karting News Briefs

stay on the pace...

  • A reminder to those who live in areas where temperatures can go sub-zero - drain your water cooled engine or risk this damage from frozen coolant! Bruce Otter from Stable Karting in Canberra (brrrrr!) told KartSportNews he sees several cases of split cylinders each year through karters forgetting to drain the system before winter hits.

  • Vale: Jarrod Meldrum. Former kart racer and DPE employee Jarrod Meldrum passed away late last month in tragic circumstances. Originally from Melbourne, the 34-year old had been living in Perth for some time, working for a trucking company. He had more recently become a West Australian Surf Lifesaver. A memorial service to celebrate his life was held in Perth on Tuesday. Another service will be held in Melbourne on Tuesday, June 16 at the Woodlands Golf Club, 109 White St, Mordialloc at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to BeyondBlue. Envelopes will be available at the venue.

  • Kartsport New Zealand conducted a survey of what karters thought of the recent NZ Sprint Championships at Manawatu. 147 people participated and 89% rated the event either Very Good or Excellent. Full survey results (there were almost 30 questions covering a wide range of aspects of the meeting) can be found HERE. I wonder if KA will do similar at the conclusion of the 2015 National and State Championship series?

  • Entries are now open for Round 3 of the Australian Kart Championship to be held in Ipswich on July 3-5. Link to the Supp Regs is on the Race Calendar page.

  • Graphic Designer Glenn Powles has expressed his disgust via social media on what he believes is a rip-off of the design work he has undertaken for DPE Kart Technology. "It's just pathetic really" he wrote of images of a Solid Kart. "They copied the X2 kit as well. I'm not sure which is worse - that the kart brand asked someone to redraw my work or someone actually agreed to redraw my work. It's massively frustrating. I find my design work all over the world knocked off by hack designers, especially in the UK." Solid Kart is an Argentine brand that began to manufacture their own kart in 2012. The photo below is of a 2013 chassis.

  • James Sera Karting Centre in Melbourne is now a stockist of the famous ELF brand. JSKC now has the fully synthetic Elf HTX 976+ 2T racing oil which is designed for engines running at high RPM (18000).

  • JSKC has also released their own branded 185-piece bolt kit. The kit includes a range of fasteners, spacers etc to suit all DPE and OTK product. JSKC also stock the individial components, so can easily top up the kit if you've used up some parts - more on JSKC website HERE.

  • There is an extra incentive for karters to compete in next month’s Northern Territory Kart Championship - a ‘ready to race’ Vegas chassis produced by DPE Kart Technology and fitted with an IAME X30 engine, all accessories and MG Yellow tyres will be up for grabs for competitors in the X30 Light class. The kart can be supplied in Arrow, Monaco or Deadly form and has a total prize value of $7,995. The prize is subject to a minimum entry of 15. “This is a fantastic incentive thanks to the teams at both DPE Kart Technology and Remo Racing.  It adds another dimension to our event and will provide extra incentive for top level drivers to challenge themselves in the Top End” said Karting NT’s Brenton Taylor.

  • Applications are now open for the Women of Australian Motor Sport (WAMS) committee's annual Junior Development Scholarship program. Former karters Caitlin Wood and Tayla Dicker were the last two recipients. While the scholarship does not provide financial assistance, it can include such aspects as fitness assessment, sports psychology, nutrition, media training, testing and networking opportunitues. "WAMS helped me out enormously with getting into the second round of the CAMS development camp and I can’t even explain how beneficial the camp was,” Dicker said. “I learnt so many new things that I probably wouldn’t be aware of now involving fitness, driving skills and many other things." Applicants must be female, hold a current KA or CAMS competition licence and be aged between 15 and 24 years as at July 1, 2015. Further info on the WAMS website HERE.

  • Something that might be of interest to karters, regardless of gender, is this competition to win a funded "arrive-and-drive" deal for the 2016 Pulsar Challenge. The competition will be conducted throughout NSW and Victoria consisting of motorkhana and track day events in Nissan Pulsar N14 and N15 road and race cars. Competitors will progress through a number of elimination rounds which will ultimately lead to a final race at Winton Motor Raceway in October where the winner will be crowned. Further info, fees etc on their website HERE.
