press release 11 May 2015

After a time penalty and broken reed valve relegated him to a grid 32 start in the Final, Victorian Oscar Piastri has charged through to an 11th place finish at the opening round of the European KF Junior Championships in Portugal.

oscar piastriOscar (right) passed 10 karts in the opening lap then gradually picked off the placings over the remaining 16 tours. He crossed the line 12th with the field under full course yellow, but was moved to 11th after Tony Kart's Kusha Maini was excluded.

"After the pre-final, the team discovered I had a badly broken reed which was costing me a lot of power" Oscar wrote. "In the final, I started 32nd, and was up to 22nd after lap 1!"

"I'd like to thank my team, Ideal Kart, and my team boss Frank Cancelli, my mechanic Alex Baten for all the hard work he has put in over the last two weeks, Remo Racing, IAME, IBEA carburettors, Kosmic, HP Tuners, Dad for getting me here and happy Mother's Day Mum! Thanks to everyone for the support, it means a lot!" ~ Oscar Piastri

Hanley wins hands down in KF

Nothing could stop the British Ben Hanley (Croc-TM-Vega): his opponents, despite being very fast throughout the whole weekend, had no chance. Hanley won both the Prefinal and the Final. According to the result of the Prefinal, the main rivals of the Brit, who won both the races leading from the first until the last lap, should have been the German Hannes Jenker (CRG-Parilla-Vega) and the Dutch Martijn Van Leeuwen (CRG-TM-Vega). They finished the morning race in second and third position, not far from the winner.

But in the Final the runner-up was another British, Tom Joyner (Zanardi-TM-Vega), who finished three seconds behind his fellow countryman. Joyner, thanks to a great start, recoverd five positions and beat the Italian Felice Tiene (CRG-Parilla-Vega) into third position. The driver from San Giuseppe Vesuviano (NA), who is racing in two categories this year, is at his second podium position of the season after the one achieved in Sarno, at he first round of the European KZ2 Championship.

Roosens is still the best in KF Junior

Among the several drivers who occupied the top of the standings during the weekend, the most consistent one was Kenny Roosens (Kosmic-Parilla-LeCont). He won both the Prefinal and the Final and gained the head of the Championship. The young Belgian driver didn’t have to fight hard in the Final: he managed to get the lead of the race immediately. He led until the chequered flag, while behind him many drivers battled for the two remaining steps of the podium. Eventually, the second position was scored by the Brazilian Caio Collet (Kosmic-Vortex-LeCont), followed by the Indian Kush Maini (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont). The Indian was then hit by a penalty for a contact during the last laps, and the third position went to the Danish Christian Lungaard (Tony Kart-Vortex-LeCont).
