Tough Weekend for Armstrong In Portugal

press release 11 May 2015

Kiwi karter Marcus Armstrong and his Tony Kart team had a tough initiation to the European CIK-FIA KF class championship in Portugal over the weekend, the 14-year-old from Christchurch finishing 19th in the Final.

Armstrong and recent WSK Master Series KF class winner Nicklas Nielsen struggled for ultimate pace at the high-speed Portimao track with Nielsen just making it into the top 10.

The event was dominated by Ben Hanley who beat fellow Brtish ace - and 2013 world karting champion - Tom Joyner to the line in the Final.

Both used TM engines with Dionisios Marcu the first of the Vortex (the Tony Kart team's engine supplier) runners in sixth.

"We had a good handle on chassis set-up which was fantastic, but the circuit delivered a lot of elevation change and also a very long straight (and) this didn’t suit us as well as others," Armstrong explained on Monday.

"We tried to develop the engine package through Saturday and Sunday but ultimately things didn’t go our way."

Armstrong also admitted he made mistakes and is looking forward to the second round of the 215 CIK-FIA European champs at the PF International circuit at Grantham in the UK next month to make amends.

"Yes," he said, "I could have salvaged a better result than I did but we fell into the wrong place at the wrong time so I am definitely looking for redemption at PFI."

For the record Armstrong qualified 24th, had a 15-13-9 run through the heats to grid up on P21 for the Pre-Final in which he finished 16th.

That gave him his starting position for the Final in which he finished 19th.

The second round of this year's CIK-FIA KF and KFJ championship will be held in the UK in June, with the third and final in Sweden in July.
