Change Of Owner at Tassie's Longest Running Kart Shop

  7 May 2015

There’s been a changing of the guard at Launceston’s longest operating Kart shop. Chris Wyatt - or CJ, as he’s more widely known - has made the decision that the time is right to hand the reigns of his business over to Scott Callow. Along with a new owner, the business will be reverting back to its original name, Launceston Kart Supplies.

The business started alongside Chris’ regular marine sales and service outlet at Riverside then moved to Invermay Rd in the early 1980s, before it was then relocated to Legana and renamed CJ Marine and Karts.

Over the years many of Tasmania’s best and most talented drivers have driven equipment supplied by CJ. The likes of Marcos Ambrose, Glenn Hays (father of KZ2 champion Chris Hays), Mark Lucas, Chris Nolan and Damian Westbrook in the early days and then there’s some of today’s generation in Zane Wyatt, Jackson Callow and veteran Johnathan Males. Not to mention that CJ himself was a pretty handy steerer in his day too.

“I’ve been involved with karting in Tasmania for over forty years and it’s been a real pleasure to serve the karting community through the shop” CJ said.

"Whilst it’s a bit sad to see this chapter end, I know things are in very good hands with Scott and I’m excited to see what this new direction will bring to karting in Tasmania.”

The business has been a long time DPE dealer, starting with the Arrow and Demon brands back in the day and today stocks all the current models in Arrow, Monaco and Deadly Karts. Alongside these are European brands Kosmic and FA Kart.

“Zane from Forty Seven Kart Tuning has agreed to continue his role as the team’s engine tuner which we’re really rapt with” said Scott Callow.

The fully stocked Launceston Kart Supplies trailer will be at most Tasmanian race meetings this year.

So, keep an eye out for Scott and his trailer at the track (you can’t miss him; he’s the big guy) and wish CJ a happy retirement - although we get the feeling he won’t be absent from the race tracks just yet.
