Karting News Briefs

  12 March 2015

  • Check out this video of the new CIK 'drop-bumper' system at work in a KF race during the recent WSK Super Master Series round at Adria. The driver goes wide over a kerb causing the nosecone to detach and pivot underneath the kart. With front wheels off the ground, the driver cannot steer the kart. It is litigious for the powers-that-be to allow the use of this device to continue. Yes, anything could fall off a kart and get trapped underneath. But this is just tempting fate...

  • James Courtney has announced there will a JC-MORTON model in his new range in honour of former DAP and Tony Kart Australia boss, Jim Morton. "Jim Morton did so much for my career" Courtney stated via social media. "(I'm) stoked to announce he will ride with the next generation of stars in the JCKart with a model, the JC-MORTON, named in his honour."

  • It's not chocolate cake, or licorice ice-cream! This is a Vega 'prime' tyre at the WSK Super Master Series at Adria last weekend. Kartcom.com report several competitors lost race positons due to lack of traction and some even had to withdraw from the event due to tyre failure. Looks like the Italian company has a bit of work to do before the next round. More HERE.

  • A reminder to competitors entering the Australian Kart Championship that on the CMS system, you need to select AUSTRALIA as the State and KARTING AUSTRALIA as the Club - not Go Kart Club of Victoria! Entry closes next Friday, March 20.

  • Former Australian CIK Champion Joey Hanssen has agreed terms to race Mach1 Kart in 2015 with a target of winning the Dutch Championship. ”I am very busy with my engine business and driver traning, preparing other people's gear and so on" he wrote on his website. "I will still do that. The only reason I'm racing now is because I don’t have any drivers to work for in the Dutch championship. So I have decided to race myself and see if i can win the championship which I have never won before."

  • Thirteen-year-old Spanish karter Marta Garcia has been chosen as this year’s FIA Women in Motorsport-supported driver for the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy. She began racing at 10 and in 2013 and 2014 finished second in the Spanish KF-J Championship. “Marta is quiet, ambitious and highly competitive" her manager (a 13-year old go karter has a manager?!) Jesus Pacheco said. "She is now studying eighth grade at school and during the evenings has a personal trainer to improve her reflexes and endurance. Her driving style is very smooth, with a steering wheel movement of less than 20 degrees." Garcia's appointment follows Swede Lina von Schedvin in 2012 and French youngster Adeline Prudent in 2013.

  • Further to the video clip at the top of this page, Formula K factory driver Bas Lammers has upped his stance at getting rid of the drop-down bumper system. Below is his rant from Facebook:

"Well everybody, during the race event in Adria - Italy we had a drivers meeting like we do always at the races. During this briefing we (kz drivers) opens the discussion about the new "drop down bumper system" spoiler again. They from the organisation said that since everybody use this bumper system no accidents happened anymore, we (drivers) got really angry and remind the organisation that during the race of the Wintercup in Lonato 2 big accidents happened because the bumper went under the gokart and the driver roll over because of this. Luckely those drivers after the accidents were OK. The orgainsation said later that it were ONLY 2 accidents... We (drivers) told and warn them that the drivers of the first 2 accidents were ok but the third time will go wrong and who will take this responsibility???? Once they got warned, a big crash happen in the bambini class 60cc because the driver (9 years old) roll over his bumper. The talented boy is now in the hospital at the intensive care fighting for his recovery! See the link below! DEAR PEOPLE, PLEASE HELP US AND LET'S DO SOMETHING BEFORE IT WILL BE TO LATE! ‪#‎STOPDROPDOWNBUMPERSYSTEM‬ "

Update on the 9-year old (Francesco Barbera) who rolled - he was initially hospitalised in what was thought to be serious condition but has improved with time. He is no longer in intensive care and according to his sister is alert and interacts with doctors and family.
