Interview: Paul Aron

from CIK-FIA

The second international season for Paul Aron in OK-Junior has revealed an undeniable new talent from Estonia. With the Ricky Flynn Motorsport team, Paul reached the peak in 2018 with a breakthrough.

Well supported by his family and especially by his brother Ralf, a current FIA F3 Driver, Paul dreams of progressing the same way later on.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR KARTING DEBUT?

I started to get excited about racing at the age of seven by accompanying my brother to all the circuits. I watched him very carefully and I had only one desire: to follow in his footsteps! I had to prove myself before my father gave me a chance. I started competing in Estonia at age eleven and it was only last year that I was able to race in international OK-Junior. It was not easy, but I was very motivated.

YOUR CAREER HAS CHANGED A LOT IN 2018. HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THIS CHANGE?

Honestly, I don’t really know. I was surprised to win the first race of the season at Adria and it suddenly gave me confidence, I felt up to the best. My victory at the Winter Cup confirmed this progress. I knew I was fast on most circuits, I just had to handle the races intelligently. It’s as if things clicked.

HAS YOUR TEAM PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THIS DEVELOPMENT?

I am very happy to race with RFM, a very competent team who always know how to provide us with high performance karts on every track. I like working with data, it allows me to learn and understand many things. My mechanic James Smith knows how to give me confidence and always encourages me to do better.

Having my brother by my side is an important element for me. Whenever he is available, he joins me at the races. He takes care of my meals, he comforts me at difficult times, he gives a lot of support. Of course, I am also very grateful to my family for allowing me to follow my passion.

TELL US ABOUT THIS FIA KARTING EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP – JUNIOR

For starters, I won everything at Sarno. Then it was more difficult at PFI. We were not quite ready for Qualifying and I did not set a good time (33rd). I did my best to move up to 14th in the Heats. I then lost several places in a tight battle at the start of the Final, I came back to close to the top 10, but my front fairing was off the hook. A weekend to forget.

I got another win at Ampfing, which gave me the advantage in the provisional standings when I arrived in Aunay. I wanted to win this event too, but after some disappointments I chose to secure the important points for the title with a 5th place finish. Becoming a European Champion is a very important step in my progress.

DO YOU HAVE PLANS FOR THE FUTURE?

Next year I will continue in Karting for a season in OK with RFM. Then I would like to go into single-seaters to climb the different levels of Motor Sport as my brother is currently doing.
