Albury-Wodonga Springs Into Action

SEPTEMBER CLUB DAY KARTICLE

by Bailey Dixon

It was a day of vivid colours: the clear cerulean sky, the lush, green grass and the bright sunlight all painting a crisp and colourful canvas for the September club day. At the Albury-Wodonga Kart Club, the multitude of racers were making full-use of the day, with a fabulous turn-out and all those in attendance eager with anticipation for some great racing.

Some might say they were ready to “Spring” into action – and it wasn’t just the blossoms that were carrying on the breeze, the tension for those of us watching was right there too.

It’s flags down and away
they go in the Restricted
Medium class.

The vigorous and exuberant Cadet 9s were the first to partake in qualifying with confident front-runner Sol Alessi taking pole position for the fifth time in eight club days.

But there was a twist.

Ascending competitor Noah Dixon failed to participate in qualifying due to issues with his starter motor, leaving him in fourth – and last – position to start the first heat.

A mere two laps into heat 1 however, and a couple of brilliant overtakes later, and Noah was in the lead. After much hard racing against Sol, he continued on to also win heat 2, heat 3 and the final, thus achieving his first ever win.

Cadet’s James Brett and Anthony Alessi spring
into action in practice.

Another rapid underdog vying with an Alessi for the win, Blake Tracey fought hard with his rival Anthony Alessi in the faster Cadet 12 class. He managed to seize pole by a tiny margin of 0.013 of a second, before Anthony fought his way into the lead to win all three heats and the final; two by less than half a second.

Further down the grid, regular Eddy Cooper and returning karter Brock Wilson fought it out for third place. The pair were extremely well-matched, with Brock in third, then, one thrilling overtake later, Eddy in third. All the while Nick Hume and Ryan Taborsky both simply enjoyed their first club day.

Cadet 9s all lined up on the grid.

In the combined Junior Light and Heavy category, speedster Jordan Chapman was being meticulously hunted down by the swift Dayna Rice, even though the two raced different power karts. The pair enjoyed some epic scraps, while the other competitors pretty much ran their own race: Dylan Muller won in the Heavy class, while the aforementioned Jordan won in the Light class.

Meanwhile, Kevin Mullavey, Joel Tyrrell and Ron Lonsdale stuck close together in order to try and claim victory in the TaG 125 Restricted Light class. All day these three battled for first place, remaining within 3 seconds of each other for most of the day; although Ron Lonsdale eventually won out.

Up in front, Jarrad Wilson and Sam Dunlevey ran their own race in their speedier unrestricted TaG karts. Sam put the pedal to the metal in chasing Jarrad for the entire day, but missed out on snagging victory this time – even though he came to within a tenth of it.

It’s on track and off-track action in the Junior

Finally, we come to the largest category of all; the 12 competitors of the Restricted Medium class. Throughout the day, Stephen O’hare, Rob Mullavey, David Brett, Jason Gambold and David Galley battled it out for first position. Stephen O’hare won heats 1 and 2, while Rob Mullavey won heat 3 and the final. David Brett and David Galley fought over second position, but really, it was anyone’s game.

And thus it was, a day of vivid colours: the clear cerulean sky, the lush green grass and the bright sunlight all painting a crisp and colourful canvas for the September club day.

At the Albury-Wodonga Kart Club, the multitude of racers were making full-use of the day, with a fabulous turn-out and all those in attendance eager with anticipation for some great racing.

Some might say they were ready to “Spring” into action, and from the sidelines, l would have to say that I agree. It was a great day of hard and close racing by all, making it not only enjoyable for the racers but also thrilling for those of us fortunate enough to be there watching.

The perfect racing formula.
