Tasmanian Statewide Series, Round 3

from Simon Conroy

The North Western Kart Club, Burnie, hosted round three of the Tasmanian Statewide Series over the weekend 8th-9th September 2018.

Drivers and crews were significantly challenged by the weather. Temperatures did not get above ten degrees and rain persisted throughout. Dry conditions were only experienced for the first two practices sessions and the final race of the meeting which was Cadet 12.

Cadet 9 was close racing all weekend with Jordan Wickham taking two wins and a second in the heats. The final was held on a wet track, that was just starting to show signs of drying. Mitchell Conroy drove a clean race setting the fastest lap, winning from Jordan Wickam and Kahley Luttrell in third. This was Kahleys’ first podium of the year and his grin said it all.

In KA3 Senior Medium, Troy Stone manage best to get his set up and driving in the variable conditions right. He qualified P1 , won a heat and the final from Jordan Distell in second and Alastair Lee third. Mitchell Evans won two of the three heats but was a DNF for the final which was a disappointing end to the round.

KA4 Junior saw was a battle all weekend. Tyson Phegan took the qualifying honours. Fletcher Bellars was the victor in heat one with only a few seconds between the first 4 places. Ethan Wyllie then turned the tables for the next two heats and final. A first lap incident in the final saw Fletcher Bellars turned around, his recovery and subsequent driving back through the field was a highlight of the day until another incident ended his weekend. Final placings were Ethan Wyllie first, Patrick Short in second and Logan Dixon third place.

In TaG class racing, Restricted Medium was an interesting round for Troy Sheehan who took pole in qualifying then went on to DNF the first three heats. Shane Stonehouse did his championship prospects no harm picking up three heat wins. The Final saw great racing with Daniel Hinds taking out the win from Shane Stonehouse and Troy Sheehan in third somewhat redeeming himself with a great run back through the field.

Tag Restricted Heavy was action packed all weekend, front runner Caitlin Fitch and Allan Sheehan resumed their on track battles for state series honours. Allan took pole from qualifying and came second in heat one to Caitlin. Allan took the next two heat wins from Caitlin and with a semi drying track for the final decided to be the first driver of the weekend to put on slicks. The plan did not work out with a trip to the gravel on lap one. Caitlin Fitch took a commanding lead until the unthinkable on lap 8 saw a rear wheel fall off. This left the race wide open and it was Dallas Harris who stepped onto the Podium for his first win. Garry Lee made it to the second step and Jordan Jones took his first ever podium finish with third place.

Tag Restricted Light was a saw a good field take to the track. P1 after qualifying went to Jessie Burrows who backed up with a first heat win. The heats were then a mixture of places Calvin Broad taking heat two and Jonty Darcy heat three. The final was dominated by Andrew Lees’ for first place Second Calvin Broad and Jonty Darcy third.

KA4 Masters proved to be Jonathan Males weekend. Two heat wins and second along with first place in the final from Sam Walter and Geoff Lawrence.

Cadet 12 was last race of the day and the first of the weekend where everyone in the field was confident to put on slicks. Toby Callow was prominent in the heats with one win and good placings. The final seemed unfamiliar ground in the sunshine but Toby quickly reverted to dry racing for a win. Denzil Sargent really stepped it up from the heats and with a calculated drive took second place after starting forth, he also took fastest lap in the final.
