by Paul Carruthers

Gavin Earl and Paul Ankerson were the two big winners at the Angas Go Kart Club’s 125cc Trophy day on Father’s Day, Sunday September 2 with both drivers claiming the win in their respective weight divisions.

The triumph for Earl was a pretty dominant one winning three of the four heats aboard his BRK kart and finishing third in the other (won by Cory Hodgson) before also taking out the final to stand on the top step of the podium with Rob Blaschek and Darren Rowe rounding out the minor placings.

Earl not only won the 125cc Heavy trophy class on the day but was also victorious in the KT Heavy class again winning four out of the five races including the final however this time his worst finish was a second place behind Greg Daw who finished third overall for the day behind Alex Martens in second.

“To win the trophy class at my home track is always great but to come away with the double and win in the KT as well really is icing on the cake and a great confidence boost leading up to the Australian Championships in Western Australia in a few short weeks time which I ,can’t wait for,” Earl stated.

Ankerson’s victory was a little tougher fought having only won one heat, the Benson kart driver was still able to accumulate enough points to start pole for the final which he was also able to win meaning the overall victory was his by four points over Corey Bilney with Ben Burford third.

KRT racer Blake Tugwell took a clean sweep of all five races in the KT Light class with fast femme Alisha Fielder solid all day claiming second for the day ahead of Cameron Jones while in the KT Medium class it was Adelaide’s Paul Brooks first leaving Ben Oxley and Nathan Caple to round out the podium.

Jamie Grundy was solid in the Statesman class with two heat wins and two second places before also winning the final. Tim Kovarik won the other two heats to take home the second place trophy with Jay Sweet third.

Grundy also finished third in the KT Twin class which was taken out by MMS kart driver Chris Ferguson with Adam Stirling second while in the Outlaw class Corey Bilney got the win ahead of Brenton Pollard and Scott Harris.

The four junior categories also provided great entertaining racing throughout the day particularly in the Junior Light category which was hotly contested in every race and as always made more interesting with sibling rivalry as the Feder brothers of Dylan and Mika going wheel to wheel in their BRK karts on several occasions.

Dylan, the older of the pair got the better of the battle on this occasion winning two heats and the final while Mika who despite failing to finish one heat due to contact from another kart was still able to claim second for the day followed by Zane Pollard from the Yorke Peninsula club in third.

Midget class driver Connor Carruthers

Junior Heavy was also won by a BRK driver with Mitchell Rigney solid claiming three heat victories and also the win in the final while young lady racer Macey Hodgson took home second and Ethan Bailey third.

The Midgets had plenty of fun out on track gaining plenty of experience with young Devil kart driver Imogen Tapley improving in just her second meeting while Connor Carruthers was showing more speed before a rain affected final which saw him learn some valuable lessons with several spins in the wet and slippery conditions.

The drivers in the Rookies class also improved throughout the day, Lateisha Holt, Sean Forrestal, Josh Rusby, Saxon Klau and Isla Rowett all enjoying their time on track.
