Records Fall at Mallala’s Superkart Cup

by Brandon Stillwell/ASC

The 2018 Superkart Cup kicked into gear at Mallala on Sunday May 27th with the possibility of some variable weather. An impressive turn out of 23 Superkarts fronted up, of which  13 were gearbox karts. This was the best we have seen from the gearbox karts at Mallala for a long time. The club would like to thank Ian Williams Tuning for sponsoring round 1 for 2018.

250 International: Chaz Maddern put in a near perfect showing, debuting his brand new DEA powered Anderson kart, with 3 heat wins and a 2nd placing in 250 International. Ilya Harpas, Matt Ramsden and the returning Roy Potter all shared the minor placings during the day. Mike Davies was the lone 250 National and was mixing it with the Inters and the 125s throughout the day.

125 Gearbox: A class full of returning racers were able to capitalise on the absence of fast man Tony Lappas to put on a show in 125 Gearbox not seen at Mallala in years. Mark Vella was the man to catch in the morning’s dry races but once the skies opened up, he didn’t have it all his own way, with both Danniel Amadio and Giuseppe Caon bagging a heat win apiece.

Stock Honda 125: If the practice times were anything to go by, then Jim Gorman meant business as soon as he rolled out of form up. A scorching pace was set by the Arrow kart pilot, setting a new class lap record  of 1:15.41 on the way to an impressive heat 1 win.

The more agile Stock Honda karts were able to mix it with the 250 and 125 class karts throughout the day, with Jim Gorman and Current Australia #1 Ralf Rupprecht sharing the heat wins. A mechanjcal issue in the final saw Ralf retire to the pitlane, leaving Jim with the overall victory. Matt Lane and class debutant Sokhon Pin both showed promise during the day, as did the visiting Shane Varley, mixing it with some of the 125 class karts.

Non-Gearbox, Harry Georgiou (86), James Gorman (12) and Rod Savage (87) (pic – Tony Noble/ASC)

Non Gearbox Rotax Light: With both Jim Gorman and Sokhon Pin performing double duties today, all eyes were on the Rotax Class. Early pace from Rod Savage was able to put him a nose ahead of Jim Gorman in heat one. Come time for heat two though, Gorman had settled into his brand new Scorpion chassis and he was able to fend off all comers to seal the next three heats and the overall honours. Harry Georgiou showed strong speed to run with Jim in both the dry and wet races.

Brothers Doug and Rod Savage battled for the final step on the podium with Rod ending up just ahead to take out 3rd. Sokhon Pin, Graham Jensen and Superkart debutant James Boden were all hot on the heels of the Savage brothers throughout the day. Young James showed superb speed in the extremely wet conditions, to be racing with some far more experienced competitors.

Non Gearbox Rotax Heavy: With only two of the initial 5 competitors able to make it to round 1, the Rotax Heavy class was small but mixed it with the Light class as always. Current Australia #1 Brandon Stillwell was the second person to reset a lap record, with a 1:20.38 put down in heat two. Both Brandon and class stalwart Ian Williams were competitive with the Light class in both the wet and dry races.

NGB Junior: Young Sebastian Amadio was the only junior running, but was able to mix it with the other classes during the day, gaining valuable wet weather experience as he went
