It was the first round of the Australian Kart Championship in Monarto last weekend and it could not have kicked off any better for Henry Johnstone.

“We were stoked, for the official practice day I was one of the fastest all day, in fact I had the 2nd fastest lap time of the day just behind my team mate Macauley Jones”.

Henry competes with Tom Williamson Motorsport and is hoping to capitalise on Tom’s knowledge of KZ2.

“Last year we did the championship on our own, it was a year for me to learn how to drive the KZ2 and we did ok. This year however we are aiming for the championship with Tom Williamson Motorsport, he did it last year with Josh Fife and hopefully we can do it with him this year”.

It was a fantastic start with Henry qualifying in 4th position after a last-minute tyre change before going out.

“I was in the kart, people were starting to go out and I said to my dad I want to change to wets, the team pitched in and I got out just in time”.

Heat one Henry came home in 2nd position right on the back bumper of Aaron Cameron.

“It was a great feeling to come 2nd, my lap time was faster than Aarons but I just couldn’t get passed him, he made it very difficult and I didn’t want to chance us both having a DNF”.

“I was so proud, I cried” says Henry’s mum “this is what Henry wants, to beat the best at the highest level, he has worked hard for it, we work hard for him to do this”.

Heat two and heat three Henry was 2nd, banking good points for the championship.

“Sunday was different, I just didn’t have pace. I had bad starts and just couldn’t make my way back up, I was bitterly disappointed, but I will learn from it and in Albury it will be different”.

Henry now sits in 6th position in the championship with 2nd only 6 points ahead of him.

“Some of those guys ahead of me got good points in the final, finishing in 17th really hurt me, to be in the hunt for the championship I have to be in the top ten at least every single race”.
