Race Report: Queensland State Cup / Capri Cup

IPSWICH KART CLUB, 24-26 November 2017

With the eighth round of the Club Championship to come the following week-end the number of competitors was less than we expected and with this not a Round of the Club Championship just 104 drivers with spanner men and women in tow arrived on the Friday for the open free practice day before the week-end activities were to get under way, the addendum issued in relation to entries being accepted up until 8.00am on the Saturday morning was a help.

We have entries as far away as Cairns and McKay and of course again great support from N.S.W. from Lismore and Coffs Harbour, along with the Ipswich faithful to guarantee a great week-end of competition for all concerned.

With Chris Robinson in control of the racing and Mark Hogan representing the KA Queensland the meeting got under way on time.

Cadet 9 Qualifying

A field of eleven driver presented for the eight minute qualifying session and at the completion we were to see Beau Bromhead (#71) off Pole with a time of 56.351 seconds, P2: Luke Trost (#14) 56.498; P3: Jaxson Burns (#23) 56.855; P4: Michael Janusz (#7) 56.904, P5: Max James (#8) with a time of 56.931 seconds.

Cadet 9 Heat 1 (10 laps)

It was always going to be a duel between Bromhead and Trost and that was the way it turned out, Beau Bromhead took the win chased home with a margin of just .109 of a second from Trost, third going to Max Walton (#68) (Kris Walton’s son) carrying the number his Dad made good use of, fourth to Michael Janusz and fifth Max James, the fastest lap was recorded by Luke Trost with a time of 56.388 seconds recorded on his eighth lap of the required ten.

Cadet 9 Heat 2 (10 laps)

Again we were to witness a great duel between Bromhead and Trost, finishing in that order with just .189 of a second separating these two youngsters, third to Max James (one better than the first Heat) with Michael Janusz fourth (a reverse of the positions these two finished in the first Heat) and fifth going to Isaac McNeill (#10) the fastest lap again to Luke Trost with a time of 56.230 seconds recorded on his ninth lap.

Cadet 9 Prefinal (14 laps)

This was to play out as per the first two occasions with Beau Bromhead taking the win over Luke Trost, the margin on this occasion being .479 of a second, third home a good drive from Jaxson Burns (#23) who, came forwards from fifth early, fourth to Max James and fifth going to Jackson Cooper (#98) who came from as far back as eighth early, fastest lap this time to Beau Bromhead with a time of 56.427 seconds on his last lap of the Prefinal.

Cadet 9 Final (18 laps)

This was an interesting Final with a number of drivers vying for the lead, in the first two or three laps we were to see three drivers holding the front spot, Beau Bromhead, Luke Trost and Michael Janusz, eighteen laps is a long way for youngsters seven to nine years of age (19.440 Klms) and after the field settled Beau Bromhead was to lead home with a margin of 7.303 seconds over second placed Michael Janusz, these were the only two placing confirmed after Post Race Technical Inspection, in the Final that had it all.

KA4 Junior Light Qualifying

A field of thirteen drivers presented for qualifying and after the session was over we were to see Kurtis Tennant (#57) with a time of 51.259 seconds secure Pole; P2: Ryan Newton (#66) 51.347; P3: Blake Lockett (#11) 51.361; P4: Kyle Evans (#34) 51.404; P5: Declan Matthews (#74) with a time of 51.439 seconds.

KA4 Junior Light Heat 1 (12)

It was a little bit uncertain who would get the better of this field, but it did not take long for Declan Matthews to strike and by the second lap he led the field, Blake Lockett came forward early to challenge and by lap six have taken control, this was to last for just three laps before Declan Matthews passed and went on to win the Heat, margin back to second just .081 of a second with Blake Lockett securing second place and the fastest lap, 51.475 recorded on his fourth lap, third going to Pole setter Kurtis Tennant and fifth to Luke Pink (#49).

KA4 Junior Light Heat 2 (12)

Matthews led for the majority of the second Heat before Lockett moved past on the penultimate lap to score the win, the margin .326 of a second back to our first Heat winner Declan Matthews, third home going to Oscar Targett (#22) with fourth to Ryan Newton and fifth Luke Pink, fastest in the Heat to Luke Pink recording a time of 51.125 seconds on his fifth lap.

KA4 Junior Light Prefinal (15 laps)

Ryan Newton started well and took the lead on the second lap holding this until the seventh lap before being relegated back to second place, meanwhile Blake Lockett fifth on the second lap passed Luke Pink to move to third on the eighth lap, followed Blake Lockett all the way to the final lap before moving forward and securing second place, the margin between himself and Matthews .446 of a second after fifteen laps, fastest to Declan Matthews with a time of 51.421 on lap seven, third place going to Ryan Newton, fourth to Luke Pink and fifth to Oscar Targett.

KA4 Junior Light Final (18 laps)

19.4 Klms is a long way for the youngsters, but it was a full field faced the starter, Matthews and Lockett went at it early with Lockett holding off Matthews until lap eleven before the positions were reversed and Declan Matthews went on to take the win, the margin back to Ryan Newton just .359 of a second, third to Blake Lockett, who held the position throughout the eighteen laps, fourth to Oscar Comley after Blake Tennant failed the inspection, and fifth spot going to Kyle Evans, fastest lap to Luke Pink (finished eighth) with a time of 51.619 seconds on his second lap of the journey.




KA3 Junior Qualifying. 

A very competitive field of twelve drivers presented to determine who would start from Pole and after the session was completed we were to see Thomas Cooper (#55) with a time of 50.603 seconds secure the position, P2: Connor Roberts (#19) 50.902: P3: Aidan Long (#8) 50.926; P4: Jack Hotter (#63) 51.001 and P5: Jacinta Hoey (#97) with a time of 51.098 seconds.

KA3 Junior Heat 1 (12 laps)

We all knew who was the favourite in this class and he did not disappoint Thomas Cooper (#55) took control of the Heat and was not challenged throughout to take the win with a margin of 2.873 seconds back to second placed Jacinta Hoey (#97), third to Aiden Long, fourth Dillan Rhoda (#32) and fifth place going to Aaron Williams (#35), fastest lap to Cooper with a time of 50.752 seconds recorded on his tenth lap.

KA3 Junior Heat 2 (12 laps)

The second Heat went as was anticipated with Thomas Cooper again taking the win, the margin back to second placed Conner Roberts (#19) 1.401 seconds, Jacinta Hoey running home in third and keeping her chances open for the Final only counts later in the afternoon, fourth going to Jack Hotter and fifth Dillan Rhoda, fastest lap to again, Cooper with a time of 50.464 seconds on his final lap of the journey.

KA3 Junior Prefinal (15 laps)

Thomas Cooper was looking for his sixth straight win at Ipswich in 2017, the Prefinal just another step in that direction, with again the win over second placed Conner Roberts the margin 4.521 seconds with third going to Jacinta Hoey, fourth Jack Hotter and fifth Aaron Williams, fastest lap to Thomas Cooper with a time of 50.765 seconds, recorded on his twelfth lap of fifteen.

KA3 Junior Final (18 laps)

A surprise retirement of Thomas Cooper after completing just two laps left the Final wide open, with a number of drivers vying to the podium positions, Jacinta Hoey was not headed for the majority of the race leading for sixteen of the eighteen laps before being past by Conner Roberts, who ran behind her throughout, before the pass that gave him the win, Jacinta was magnificent in her second placing, the margin just .777 of a second, third went to Brock Heit (#45), fourth to Jarad Boyes (#64) and fifth to Aaron Williams, fastest lap recorded by Conner Roberts a time of 51.234 seconds on his eleventh lap of the eighteen lap journey, besides Cooper we had Dillan Rhoda and Aidan Long fail to finish the race.

KA3 Senior Light Qualifying

A smaller than usual field of this class presented for qualifying seven in number, after the eight minute session we were to see Jarrad Costello (#47) take Pole with a time of 50.711 seconds; P2: Mitch Wooller (#22) 50.982; P3: Lachlan Nichols (#68) 51.011; P4: Brieann Moyse (#75) 51.058 (great to see this young lady up into Seniors and still obviously so keen to continue her karting experience) and P5: Daniel Murrell (#9) with a time of 51.058 seconds ( not very often you see two drivers record exactly the same time in qualifying).

KA3 Senior Light Heat 1 (12laps)

Jarad Costello took the win without any challenges, the margin to second placed Lachlan Nichols .346 of a second, third going to Mitch Wooller, who also recorded the fastest lap time with a 51.048 second lap recorded on his tenth lap of the required twelve, fourth place taken by Daniel Murrell and fifth going to Brieann Moyse.

KA3 Senior Light Heat 2 (12laps)

Jarad Costello crossed the line in front, but after an apparent time penalty finished in fourth spot giving Lachlan Nichols the win from Brieann Moyse moved up to finish second, a margin of just .606 of a second separating these two, third went to Daniel Murrell, fourth as stated Costello and fifth to Daley Martin (who was not having the best of days) fastest lap going to Brieann Moyse with a time of 51.293 seconds on her tenth lap.

KA3 Senior Light Prefinal (15 laps)

Lachlan Nichols led the first three laps before being relegated back to second behind Jarad Costello, the prefinal was to finish with a margin of .610 seconds between these two, third going to Brieann Moyse and fourth to Daniel Murrell, finishing fifth was Mitch Wooller, best time by Lachlan Nichols with a time of 50.778 seconds on his penultimate lap.

KA3 Senior Light Final (18 laps)

No one was able to catch Jarad Costello in the Final and he went on to take the win over second placed Brieann Moyse (great drive) the margin 6.784 seconds, Moyse followed for the first twelve laps before taking the pass and going on to secure the second spot on the podium, third going to Daniel Murrell after a great drive, fourth throughout the first twelve laps finally making a pass to finish in third, Nichols dropped back as far as fifth at one point before moving forward to finish fourth, fifth place in the Final going to Dale Zimmerman (#88) the fastest lap to Jarrad Costello with a time of 51.123 on his fourteenth lap.

This was probably the smallest field of this class we have seen all year, but, the racing was spectacular, after the eight minute session was concluded we were to see Dylon Rudd (#99) with a time of 51.526 seconds secure Pole, P2: Ashley Davis (#25) 51.998; P3: John Jones (#21) 52.099; P4: Andrew Andreou (#88) 52.113 and P5: Zari Patrick (#4) with a time of 52.233 seconds.

TaG 125 Restricted Light Heat 1 (12 laps)

Dylan Rudd started from Pole (as was expected) with Ash Davis beside him on the front row, Davis holding second throughout the majority of the Heat with Andrew Andreou snatching second with just three laps remaining, Davis securing third, Jones fourth with an all the way run and Jack Boyle likewise in fifth, fastest lap to Rudd with a time of 51.628 seconds on his eighth lap.

Tag 125 Restricted Light Heat 2 (12 laps)

Heat two was a repeat of the first Heat for the top four positions the margin between Rudd and second place 4.821 seconds with Zari Patrick home in fifth, fastest lap again to Rudd with a time of 51.431 seconds on his final lap of the Heat.

TaG 125 Restricted Light Prefinal (15)

Dylan Rudd continued his winning performance in the Prefinal with the margin back to second placed Andrew Andreou 7.723 seconds, third home going to Ashley Davis and fourth Zari Patrick (up two positions from the second Heat) fifth place filled by John Jones, fastest lap again to Dylan Rudd, time 51.599 seconds recorded on his final lap.

TaG 125 Restricted Light Final (18)

Dylan Rudd took the Final with a dominating performance finishing 9.804 seconds ahead of second placed Ashley Davis (his sponsors more than happy with this result) third going to Andrew Andreou, fourth John Jones (consistent throughout the day) and fifth place going to Brad McCormack (#85) fastest lap going to Dylan Rudd with a time of 51.704 seconds on his fourteenth lap.

TaG 125 Restricted Medium Qualifying

A field of just seven drivers presented for qualifying and we were to see Lachlan Palmer secure pole position with a time of 52.924 seconds; P2: Lee Sadler (#66) 53.020; P3: Kel Farrell (#7) 53.035; P4: Peter Virgulti (#9) 53.116 and P5: Bill Miller (#90) with a time of 53.987 seconds.

TaG 125 Restricted Medium Heat 1 (12 laps)

Lee Sadler took the win with a margin of 1.107 seconds over second placed Kel Farrell with Lachlan Palmer running home in third, fourth to Peter Virgulti and fifth Bill Miller, fastest lap going to Lachlan Palmer with a time of 52.817 seconds on his final lap of the Heat.

TaG 125 Restricted Medium Heat 2 (12 laps)

Lachlan Palmer jumped away strongly and led from start to finish, taking the win with a margin of 1.382 seconds over second placed Lee Sadler, third home going to Kel Farrell, fourth to Peter Virgulti and fifth Peter Greenwood (#64), fastest lap to Lee Sadler with a time of 52.698 seconds on his penultimate lap of the Heat.

TaG 125 Restricted Medium Prefinal (15 laps)

Another winner in the Prefinal made for an interesting battle for the eighteen lap Final still to come, Peter Virgulti crossing the line in front, margin back to second placed Kel Farrell just .544 of a second, third to Linus Brown (#71) and fourth Bill Miller, Lee Sadler, Lachlan Palmer and Peter Greenwood failing to finish the number of laps required, fastest of the rest going to Kel Farrell with a time of 53.027 seconds recorded on his ninth lap.

TaG 125 Restricted Medium Final (18 laps)

Lachlan Palmer took the win, trailing Kel Farrell for the first ten laps before moving past and going on to win, Kel Farrell dropping away to third towards the end of the eighteen laps, second place going to Peter Virgulti with the margin between himself and the winner being 2.167 seconds, fourth on the day to Lee Sadler, who, posted the fastest lap with a time of 53.229 seconds on his eleventh lap, fifth place to Bill Miller.

TaG 125 Light Qualifying:

A great field of eighteen top line drivers presented for the qualifying session, after the session was completed we were to see Scott Sorensen (#12) off Pole with a time of 48.405 seconds, P2: James Litzow (#58) down from Bundaberg for the week-end 48.429; P3: Harrison Hoey (#97) 48.461; P4: Jace Matthews (#74) 48.489 and P5: Eryn Osborne (#31) up from Lismore with a time of 48.526 seconds.

TaG 125 Light Heat 1 (12 laps)

Scott Sorensen and Harrison Hoey took early control of the Heat before Jace Matthews rounded them up on lap four, Sorensen back to second and Hoey dropping back to fifth as James Litzow, taking advantage of the situation and  moving up into third, Adam Mercer sitting in fifth early on, Harrison Hoey remaining in fifth for just the one lap before moving forward past Eryn Osborne for fourth, Osborne dropping to sixth, Mercer left it until lap ten before moving past Hoey to secure fourth, meanwhile no challenges further forward with Jace Matthews taking the win with a margin of just .357 of a second back to Scott Sorensen, who, recorded the fastest lap with a time of 48.744 seconds on his ninth lap, finishing third came James Litzow, fourth going to Adam Mercer and fifth to Harrison Hoey.

TaG 125 Light Heat 2 (12 laps)

The second Heat and we were to see Scott Sorensen jump away well and lead throughout the twelve laps finishing just.342 of a second ahead of James Litzow, who picked up two positions coming from fourth on the first lap, James and Jace Matthews having a battle royal throughout the Heat to see Jace Matthews unable to better James and finish in third, fourth spot to Bailey Sagaidak (#26) picking up two spots on the way and Kade Vink (#72) running sixth mid race before moving up to finish in fifth, fastest lap going to James Litzow with a time of 48.544 on his seventh lap.

TaG 125 Light Prefinal (15 laps)

This was the race that would determine who would start from the front row for the Final only to count later in the afternoon and Scott Sorensen was not to be denied with a great win over James Litzow with a margin of just .357 of a second, third place going to Jace Matthews with fourth Adam Mercer and fifth to the young lady from Lismore Eryn Osborne, fastest lap to Jace Matthews with a time of 48.859 seconds recorded on his tenth lap.

TaG 125 Light Final (18 laps)

Scott Sorensen made it very clear to all that he was not going to be denied the 2017 Queensland State Cup for TaG 125 Light with a sensational win over the distance, Scott was chased all the way by the young man from Bundaberg James Litzow, who finished just .271 of a second away in second place and recorded the fastest lap with a time of 48.991 seconds on his sixteenth lap of the journey, third went to Adam Mercer, fourth to Marcello Surace (#93) and fifth went to Luke Collett (#68) from Coffs Harbour, great race great field of competitors.

TaG 125 Heavy Qualifying

Just eight drivers presented for the eight minute session and at the end we were to see Jarad Neinert (#18) start from Pole with a time of 49.849 seconds; P2: Chris Williams (#3) 49.851; P3: Sam Houston (#6) 49.929, P4: Rudy Farkas (#4) 50.141 and P5: Scott Gray (#7) with a time of 50.161 seconds.

TaG 125 Heavy Heat 1 (12 laps)

Jarad Neinert made it clear early that he was not going to be denied by taking the win with a margin of .567 seconds over second placed Chris Williams (#3), third going to Rudy Farkas and fourth Sam Houston, fifth to Scott Gray, fastest lap to Williams with a time of 49.972 seconds on his fifth lap.

TaG 125 Heavy Heat 2 (12 laps)

The second Heat went much the same as the first except Scott Gray filled third spot with Neinert winning from Williams with a margin of 1.420 seconds, fourth place filled by Rudy Farkas and fifth going to Callan Sayers (#71) fastest lap to our winner with a time of 49.919 seconds on his eighth lap.

TaG 125 Heavy Prefinal (15 laps)

I have not seen Jarad Neinert so intense with his racing, he went on to confirm this with a win in the Prefinal by a margin of 2.510 seconds over Chris Williams, also taking the fastest lap of 50.049 seconds recorded on his eighth lap, third place going to Callan Sayers, fourth Gavin Whitmore (#35) and fifth to Kory Jennings (#46).

TaG 125 Heavy Final (18 laps)

Jarad Neinert made it a clean sweep of the event with a resounding win in the Final a margin of 9.662 seconds whilst recording the fastest lap, 50.086 seconds, an excellent tyre for this class, just .237 of a second drop off over 57 laps (61.560 Klms), over second placed Chris Williams, with third going to Gavin Whitmore, fourth Callan Sayers and fifth to Sam Houston.

Cadet 12 Qualifying.

A field of 20 youngsters presented for qualifying to determine who would start from Pole, after the session was completed we were to see Ethan Feather (#26) start from the spot with a time of 54.996 seconds; P2: Alice Buckley (#50) 55.104; P3: Carter Mobbs (#60) 55.209; P4: Marcus Watson (#7) 55.212and P5: Samuel James (#44) 55.398 second lap.

Cadet 12 Heat 1 (12 laps)

It was always going to be a battle between Ethan Feather and Alice Buckley, throw Carter Mobbs into that equation as well and we were not to be disappointed, Feather led the first six laps being chased along by Mobbs and Buckley in third, Carter Mobbs took over the lead on lap seven, holding it for four laps before on the penultimate lap Mobbs was bumped and spun out of contention, Buckley quick to take advantage moved up into second position, the margin between first and second a mere 0.067 of a second, Sebastian Tupackovski  running home in third, fourth going to Samuel James, who also recorded the fastest lap time 55.331 seconds on his eighth lap, fifth to Marcus Watson.

Cadet 12 Heat 2 (12 laps)

Ethan Feather took control early, leading for the first seven laps before Carter Mobbs took over the lead on the eighth lap, Feather immediately fought back and regained the lead for the next two laps when Carter Mobbs again moved past and went on to win the Heat, the margin back to second being .440 of a second, finishing third came Samuel James with Alice Buckley in fourth and Marcus Watson fifth.

Cadet 12 Prefinal (15 laps)

By this time Feather had fine- tuned his performance and took a resounding win over Mobbs, the margin 9.424 seconds, third place going Marcus Watson (moving up) with fourth Alice Buckley and fifth Hayden Egan (#6), fastest lap going to Ethan Feather with a time of 54.795 seconds recorded on his thirteenth lap of the journey.

Cadet 12 Final (18 laps)

Ethan Feather led from start to finish against this very talented field, Carter Mobbs finishing in second, the margin 5.946 seconds, third went to Marcus Watson, back to fourth on laps fourteen and fifteen before regaining third, Alice Buckley up to third on these two laps before dropping back to finish fourth, fifth going to Kyle Suffolf (#94), fastest lap recorded by Ethan Feather with a time of 55.325 seconds recorded on his sixteenth lap of the Final.

 

Well that’s my report for the week-end of the 24th, 25th and 26th for the 2017 State Cup (Maroon Plate) and the Capri State Cup; it was a huge week-end, I hope you enjoy the read as much as I enjoyed writing it.
