Open Performance Returns to Ipswich

IPSWICH KART CLUB, 5TH AUGUST 2017

A beautiful day welcomed 150 entries, with spanner men and woman along with families in tow for the fifth round of the Ipswich Kart Club, Club Championship for 2017.

The format for the day’s racing voted by the Members at a recent General Meeting, no qualifying, with a luck of the draw first Heat, reverse for the second and a prefinal with a final only to count.

Members from Club’s across the South East of Queensland and Northern NSW made for a great atmosphere for a day that was to be full of excitement and drama.

Although there was no official feature class on the day, we had a roll up of thirteen drivers in attendance for Open Performance. This is only the second time that this class has run for 2017 at Ipswich, the field full of past and present champions, all looking to take the major slice of the pie at the end of the day.

The top six in Heat 1 boasted names that read like a who’s who of karting; Brendan Nelson, Scott Sorensen, Tristan Ellery, Thomas Turner, Mak Holden and Adam Mercer, with Scott Sorensen grabbing the fastest lap, a 47.177 seconds recorded on his sixth circuit of the track.

Heat 2 was to see Brendan Nelson with the advantage of a six speed sequential gearbox take the Heat with a time of 47.412 on his fifth lap of the outing, second going to Tristan Ellery and third Adam Mercer.

The prefinal was an opportunity to watch one of Australia’s best finish almost four and a half seconds ahead of Scott Sorensen with Tristan Ellery almost nine seconds away in third and Adam Mercer in fourth, best lap going to Brendan Nelson with a time of 47.339 seconds.

Everyone was holding their breath as the Final for Open Performance moved out onto the track for the fifteen laps of racing to determine who would stand on the top step. Brendan Nelson continued his outstanding drive to take the win by a margin of seventeen seconds over Tristan Ellery with Brock Lannoy coming home third. Fastest lap went to Nelson with a time of 47.212 seconds. A wonderful performance by all concerned, the Club and myself are looking forward to seeing a twin engine kart come out for a run later in the year.

The Meeting was a great success and the remainder of the racing finished as follows:
