Esperance Celebrate “Havin’ A Play” Memorial at SE Zone Round 3

Esperance Kart Klub hosted the Memorial “Havin’ a Play” South Eastern Zone Round 3 over the weekend of June 3 and 4.

The third round was held in honour of former Esperance Kart Klub members Bill Green, Rowdy Pitchers and Norm wright, who 10 years ago tragically lost their lives in a plane crash.

The event is the 3rd round in a 4 round go kart competition series held across Albany, Kalgoorlie, Esperance and Lake King.  Drivers earn points each round and after the 4th round the driver in each division with the highest points will earn a prestigious Black Plate Trophy.

97 drivers entered the event across 10 classes, hailing from Esperance, Kalgoorlie, Albany, Lake King, Bunbury and Perth. Esperance Kart Klub represented strongly with 23 drivers entered in the event.

After a prior weather forecast of wet weather for the weekend, on Saturday morning competitiors woke to heavy fog, later lifting to reveal a glorious day for racing. Perfect weather conditions continued on the Sunday making way for fast and furious racing across all classes in the finals. Only two major accidents over the weekend, both drivers were able to walk away with only minor injuries.

Sportsman KA3 Heavy class was sporting the largest field for the weekend with 17 drivers, and 10 of them EKK members.  Fast, competitive racing had the lead positions changing constantly finally seeing Stephen Clee (EGKC) take the win for the weekend followed by Dion Hounsfield (LKK) in 2nd and Liam Florisson (LKK) in 3rd.

Cadet 12’s hosting the second largest field of 15 saw Lachlan Marshall from Hurricane Kart Club dominate over the weekend taking 1st place in all the heats and the final. Esperance local boy Logan Panizza (EKK) was hot on his tail all weekend finishing 2nd on the podium and James Micucci-Allen (TKC) in 3rd.

The Panizza name continued to grace the podium steps seeing Holly Panizza (EKK) finish in 1st place in the KA4 Junior Heavy after dominating all weekend followed by Lochlen Harvey (TKC) in 2nd and Thomas Callaghan (TKC) in 3rd. Holly stood once again on the podium in 3rd place in KA3 Junior – 1st place going to Chase Hoy (HCK) and 2nd place to Kieren Ellis (T&HCK).

In the Sporstman KA3 Combined had Keb Evans (LKK) finish 1st, Daniel Panizza (EKK)  finish 2nd and Spencer Stone (BKC) in 3rd.

Competitors now look forward to the 4th and final round of the series which are to be held in Lake King in August.
